We went for a memorable family vacation to Mauritius in July. Mauritius has diverse landscape and offers adventures and activities for all age groups. There are white sandy beaches and water activities as expected on a tropical island. But there are also national parks with hiking trails, tea and sugarcane plantations with an interesting history, a capital city that offers sightseeing opportunity, and more. Weather in Mauritius in July

Mauritius benefits from a mild climate all year round with an average temperature of 25ºC. Summer in Mauritius lasts from December to April, and this is also the peak tourist season. The island generally only sees prolonged rain in January and February, when cyclones roll in from the Indian Ocean. The shoulder seasons (March-April, October-November) offer fewer crowds and deals.

Mauritius weather in July is fine for a beach holiday.

Winter in Mauritius (June to August) is rather mild with an average temperature of around 22ºC. So July in Mauritius was great from a weather point of view. No rains. Pleasant days with an average of 23ºC and cool nights. Apart from December-January holidays, winter months are also tourist season. It coincides with school holidays in Europe and Asia. We still managed to get a good rate for Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa for our beach holiday.

What to wear in Mauritius in July

It is regular beach weather in Mauritius so pack your T-shirts, shorts, dresses and sandals for daytime in Mauritius in July. You will need sun protection all day: sun hat, sun screen, and shades. Of course, no beach holiday packing list is complete without a couple of swim suits and a cover-up.

You will need to carry a couple of light jackets for the cool nights. Also, do pack a few smart evening dresses, people generally do dress up for dinners at luxury resorts in Mauritius.

Mauritius is not just beaches and ocean. There are so many hiking options in nature reserves, cultural and sightseeing options around the country that comfortable shoes to walk are a must to pack. If you want to hike, add comfortable shorts or pants with a cotton / dry-fit T-shirt.

What to expect regarding crowds and cost

July is a popular time of year to visit Mauritius due to the summer holidays in Europe and Asia. So it’s not really off-season. May to October is cooler and drier, ideal for hiking and avoiding heavy rain. That said, the peak tourist season with the highest cost is from November until February.

July is a good time to visit Mauritius. The island is not too crowded and the beach resorts not too pricey. The east coast of the island faces high winds so you should be careful with that.

Best places to visit in Mauritius in July

Staying away from the windier locations in the eastern and southern parts of the country is a good idea. Pick beaches on the north and west sides of the island instead to stay insulated from the winds.

As such, you can visit any place in the country to enjoy cultural or adventure activities. Mauritius is about sandy beaches and blue ocean. But do take time to visit Black River Gorges national park, for the famous Seven Coloured earth, beautiful waterfalls and natural landscape. I have later visited Morne Seychellois park in Seychelles, but the activities here are not as diverse as what I experienced in Mauritius national park.

We rented an open jeep one day and drove to the eastern coast of Mauritius. You can visit the capital city, Port Louis and see some cultural spots plus colourful markets.

Festivals and events in Mauritius in July

Mauritius is a cultural melting pot with a population consisting of various religions and origins. Eid-Ul-Fitr, the New Year celebrated by Mauritian Muslims, also marks the end of the month of Ramadan. Every year, the festival date changes as it is based on the Islamic lunar calendar. But there are times when this festival occurs in July.

Several trails and races are organized during the year, open to foreigners, such as the Ultra Trail Raidlight in July.

Unique things to do in Mauritius in July

Nature activities: Mauritius has several national parks and reserves for all family members to enjoy. View the Chamarel Falls at Black River Gorges national park, There are guided day tours to this park. Enjoy the wildlife at La Vanille Nature Park, have a 4X4 safari adventure at Bel Ombre Nature Reserve. This diversity of landscape and activities beyond beaches is where Mauritius scores over the Maldives.

Water activities: Mauritius, like any other tropical island offers several water activities including snorkelling and scuba diving. You can take a boat tour to the pristine islands around Mauritius, like the popular Ile Aux Cerfs. Enjoy dolphin watching at Tamarind Bay, kayaking, kitesurfing, and much more. There are many things to do in Mauritius with family.

Cultural activities: Aparvasi Ghat is a good place to know more about the culture and history is the island. You can book a full-day tour of Port Louis. If colonial heritage and cultural excursions is your thing, you will find those a reason to visit Mauritius over Seychelles.

You can visit a rum distillery and see the process for making rum. There is a famous tea route in Mauritius that involves visiting some of the oldest tea plantations and factories on the island.
