Master Distiller Richard Seale is renowned for his innovative approaches to aging and blending. While the distillery doesn’t offer formal tours, visitors can explore the grounds and purchase rare bottlings directly from the source.

Mount Gay Rum Distillery, Barbados

No rum tour of the Caribbean would be complete without a visit to Mount Gay in Barbados, the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery. Founded in 1703, Mount Gay offers visitors a comprehensive look at its centuries-old production methods.

The tour includes a visit to the molasses house, fermentation house, and aging warehouse, culminating in a tasting of their premium rums, including the renowned Black Barrel and XO expressions.

If you are staying in the Parish of St. James, which also has the beautiful Paynes Bay Beach, this distillery is not too far. manny travellers choose to stay near the Paynes beach, either in hotels or luxury villa options.

St. Nicholas Abbey, Barbados

St. Nicholas Abbey in Barbados offers a unique blend of architectural history and rum production. This Jacobean mansion, built in 1658, houses a small craft distillery that produces exquisite rum in limited quantities. 

Visitors can tour the great house, explore the lush gardens, and witness the entire rum-making process from cane grinding to bottling. Their premium aged rums, presented in beautiful hand-etched bottles, make for excellent souvenirs.

Appleton Estate, Jamaica

Nestled in the lush Nassau Valley of Jamaica, Appleton Estate has been producing rum since 1749. The distillery tour is a sensory journey through the rum-making process, from harvesting sugarcane to aging the spirit in oak barrels.

Sadly, we could not make time to visit the Appleton Estate during our trip to Jamaica. But had to contend with buying the Appleton rum at the airport duty-free shop.

While Bacardi’s roots are in Cuba, its largest rum distillery is located in Cataño, Puerto Rico. The “Cathedral of Rum” offers an immersive experience, combining history, art, and science. River Antoine Rum Distillery, Grenada

  1. Awesome! I’m happy to see one of Jamaica’s distilleries on the list. Our other 2 distilleries, Hampden Estate & the Worthy Park Estate, are just as exciting 🙂 I hope to visit another island’s rum distilleries in the future. Great post
