Best places to visit in Europe in April (& May)

Figuring where to travel with your family during the spring break? Look no further! Here are ideas on the best places to visit in Europe in April. This includes some of the best European cities to visit in April as well.

Why visit European cities in April? Many popular European cities suffer from over-tourism and the summer months of July and August are peak season. The prices in summer time are rocketing and availability for hotels and car rentals becomes a challenge. Plus it gets unbearably hot in many parts of Europe during late summer. The shoulder months of April, May, June are the best time to visit places in Europe. Some of these places could be great for winter destinations in Europe as well.

April sees the emergence of spring sunshine across Europe. Cyprus, Malta, Greece, Spain, Portugal are some of the warm destinations to visit in Europe in April. In other parts like Scandinavian and Eastern European countries, spring is in full swing, so you can expect many pleasant days. While the lower tourist numbers across Europe means less crowded attractions and affordable prices for flights and hotels.

There is a buzz in the cities with the start of summer in Europe in April. And the activities for families are so many, that your vacation is bound to be a pleasure. And Interrail Pass and Eurail Pass make it quite convenient to travel across Europe.

This list of 35 ideas includes the best European cities to visit in April and May, as well as many regions in Europe that come alive during this time.

Best European Cities to visit in April

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Art, history, parks, activities for kids, fine dining, cafe culture, creative vibe, this lovely city has something to offer for everyone. Visiting Amsterdam is spring season avoids the peak summer crowds and the weather is relatively mild. It is one of the best European cities to visit in April.

If you have just a day or two to explore Amsterdam, my recommendation would be to stay in the city center. Most of the top attractions and the century-old canals are in the heart of the city. We found this very useful in our 2-day Amsterdam itinerary with kids.

The heart of the city is best explored on foot. The city’s historic canals can be admired via a morning stroll or you can opt for a cruise. A cruise might be the preferred option with younger kids. With older kids, a Segway or a bike tour can also be considered.

Amsterdam is one of the best European cities to visit in April.

The city is a treasure trove for art lovers. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Stedelijk Museum – all 3 museums are within easy walking distance. The city has some good museums for kids as well. My 6-year old daughter loved the time we spent at the NEMO Science Center.

Amsterdam offers many parks for your kids to bike or run around. Vondelpark – the most famous park in Amsterdam is a big hit with families and kids.

And if this hasn’t convinced you to consider Amsterdam for your family vacation, their cheese and sweet offering would! Take a cheese tasting session and buys loads of cheese for home as local Dutch treats. If you have more time in the country, take one of the day trips from Amsterdam to enjoy Dutch countryside in spring.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is not only a kid-friendly city to visit, but it has also been a dynamic and vibrant place to raise my 3 kids. It is a great option amongst European cities to visit in April. A ride on the hop on hop off bus is a good way to see the city.

This sunny Spanish city is walkable, so getting around with little ones is uncomplicated. Many of the major sights are concentrated in the “old city” such as the mysterious cobblestoned Gothic Quarter, the medieval Born district, and the Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar.

You can also get around using Barcelona’s smooth-as-butter public transportation system. The wait time is short. And it’s a well-connected web of the bus, metro, and tram, all of which can be used on one ticket.

Barcelona

Wandering around Barcelona’s streets is safe, even when night falls. It’s not surprising to see kids enjoying tapas with their parents on the weekends, well past 10pm. However, expect restaurants to provide minimum services for little ones. For kid entertainment, Barcelona is an open-air museum.

Walking the streets is an experience in itself – all you have to do is look up! For things to do as a family, check out the works of architect Antoni Gaudí. He made his mark throughout the city with his colorful and quirky buildings like the almost-melting basilica – the Sagrada Familia. Or check out his Candyland-like Parc Guell. This is a unique park that boasts two huge gingerbread houses, rocks sculpted into palm trees, and multi-colored tilework of a dragon.

For a less touristy place, do visit Cosmocaixa, a sophisticated hands-on science museum with a stunning indoor Amazonian forest, where it rains every 15 minutes.

Berlin, Germany

Consider Berlin for your spring break in Europe. The city isn’t crowded yet, and the weather is at its most pleasant (except for some spring showers). Daytime weather in April is pleasant while the nights are still cold. It is one of the best European cities to visit in April.

The best part of visiting Berlin in April is there are less crowds at all the tourist attractions. So you can enjoy visiting everything from Berliner Dom to Brandenburg Gate to Reichstag (the home of the German Parliament) at your own pace. Ditto for the amazing museums located in Museuminsel. No snaking lines to get in anywhere. If you are visiting Berlin with kids, there is also the DDR Museum, that explores everyday life in erstwhile East Germany.

Berlin is a great European city to visit in April

What my daughter enjoyed the most was the day spent at Berlin Zoo. Home to the world’s largest variety of species, it is one of the best zoos to visit in Europe. It is home to many animal species – polar bear, orangutan, polar wolves, penguins, okapi, panda bear to name a few. The 33-hectare zoo is large and filled with beautiful trees.

There are also several exciting events that happen in Berlin in April. There is a half marathon in Berlin where thousands of runners come from all over the world. At the E-Prix in Berlin, the best electric racing drivers in the world competeEvery year in spring, the Britzer Baumblüte celebrates the beauty of the blossoming trees.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is considered more of a “youth” destination rather than a family destination. But it packs in a lot of fun for the little ones. Once the twin capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Budapest is a typical European city. Cobbled streets, a beautiful castle, a lovely river, numerous bridges linking the two sides, an active Opera house, a dominating basilica and a large Jewish quarter. Yet, it retains its distinctive Hungarian roots.

We loved exploring Gozsdu Udvar and Kazinczy Utca – where ruin pubs and restaurants jostled with colorful play areas and outdoor beer gardens with hammocks. The funicular ride at the Buda Castle was exciting. Apart from the views and the architecture, the Castle hosts a number of art exhibitions. You get lovely views of the city and the river from Citadella on Gellert Hill as well.

A short cruise on the Danube is refreshing. Stop by at Margaret Island for the musical fountains, extensive play areas and a long bicycle ride in a lush, car-free zone. Heroes’ Square at the end of Andrassy Avenue is a must do.

Wondering where to go in Europe in April? Budapest is a good option.

As are the famous hot baths. Margaret Island has the most kid-friendly baths but Szechenyi also goes down well with kids. There are 2 temperature-controlled outdoor pools with jacuzzis and whirlpool. And more than 10 indoor pools at temperatures varying from 16oC to 40oC. Don’t miss walking across the Chain bridge and eating kurstoskalacs!

Budapest has a lot of interesting options as far as food is concerned. You can pick from one of the food tours in Budapest to enjoy Hungarian cuisine. A relatively weak currency (Hungarian Forint) ensures that there is ample choice for accommodation.

Copenhagen, Denmark

April is the best time to visit Copenhagen because the weather isn’t as cold and rainy as it usually is. In addition, it’s not the peak summer months, so attractions are less crowded and flights/ hotels are slightly less expensive. Can’t call it cheap, it’s Scandinavia, after all! In addition, keep in mind that there are a few public holidays in April, where things might be closed: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday.

Some of the top things to do with family, both young and old, in Copenhagen are Louisiana Museum and Tivoli Gardens.

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen

The second-oldest operating theme park in the world, Tivoli Gardens was opened in 1843 and will be a hit with kids and adults alike. Both Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney visited several times! Just check that it’s actually open when you’re in town, as it closes over winter and re-opens in the middle of April. In addition, it is sometimes booked out for company events and thus closed to the public, so check before you book. There are historic buildings, wandering peacocks, shops, restaurants, and, of course, lots of fun rides to be enjoyed on the grounds.

Lousiana Museum of Modern Art, on the other hand, is located a short train ride from Copenhagen. It’s simple enough to take the train there, then just follow the crowds and walk for about 10 minutes till you get to the museum. It is beautifully situated right by the coast, and the setting is part of what makes the modern art in the museum even more special.

Geneva, Switzerland

People do perceive Geneva as one of the business destinations in Europe. Perhaps, this is not entirely false as Geneva hosts 33 International organizations and more than 300 NGOs. That said, this lovely city also boasts of panoramic views of Lake Leman and Jet d’eau. It has some great free-admission museums, has numerable parks and is the hub for ever-enduring Swiss chocolates. Switzerland with kids, in any case, makes for a joyous family holiday.

Geneva is a good option amongst the best European cities to visit in April. Free admission to some exquisite museums in Geneva makes it an ideal location for a family vacation on a budget. Few such museums are:

  • The History of Science Museum has the oldest and yet surprisingly the best scientific equipment ever used in the history.
  • Maison Tavel has a 3D structure of Geneva on the third floor.
  • Ariana Museum has 20,000 different objects made up of glass, ceramics, and porcelain.
  • CERN is where one can understand the fundamentals of the universe.
  • Museum of Ethnography recites everything about the world history and world culture under one roof.
Broken Chair in Geneva

Apart from the museums, a family can definitely enjoy a good time near the lake. There are free admission gardens, parks and botanical gardens near the lake that promise a relaxing family vacation. Taking a boat ride and hiking to Mount Saleve for the gorgeous view of the city is part of this 2-day Geneva itinerary.

Geneva also has kid-friendly areas like Carouge. With a Sardinian kind of architecture and best of Swiss Chocolate makers, Carouge invites kids of all ages to enjoy a wonderful time in the city. The place keeps the kids entertained with street murals like unsolved puzzles, maze structures and much more. Geneva is well connected to Interlaken and the mountain villages of Jungfrau, should you wish to extend your trip to explore Bernese Oberland region.

Aberdeen, Scotland

Aberdeen, Scotland is a fantastic place to visit in April. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or visiting Aberdeen as a family, there is something for everyone!

Known for being the oil capitol of Europe, Aberdeen is mix of cultures all across the globe. Within the city, you’ll find great Indian cuisine, amazing kabab shops for quick food. And even hole in the wall Thai restaurants serving some amazing Pad Thai. With that said, when visiting Aberdeen, you must try the fish and chips, and Hass’s Fish and Chips is the best chippy shop in town. Their portions are huge, so visit with a hungry belly!

Aside from a great selection of food, Aberdeen boasts a beautiful coastline perfect for walks along the beach. There’s even a small theme park along the waterfront, called Codona’s, with both indoor and outdoor activities to suit any type of weather April brings.

And, as you may know, no trip to Scotland would be complete without visiting a castle or two. Aberdeen is the gateway to the Scotland Castle Trail. Along the castle trail, you’ll find castle ruins with ocean views, and castles like b, still fully in tact and offering tours inside the castle itself. It’s a fantastic way to see what life used to look like hundreds of years ago in Scotland.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is arguably Scotland’s most scenic city, with its iconic castle and Arthur’s Seat dominating the skyline. Arthur’s Seat itself and this charming city has inspired many inspiring Edinburgh quotes. April brings the mild Spring weather and is an ideal month to explore without the peak-season crowds.

No trip to the Scottish capital would be complete without visiting Edinburgh Castle. This was once home to Kings and Queens, including Mary Queen of Scots and James V. A guided tour is included in the admission price and is highly recommended to help you get the most from your time. The Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny are just two of the many highlights before a visit to the castle café for one of their famous scones.

Edinburgh is one of the best cities in Europe to visit in April.

Those looking for entertainment won’t be disappointed, with numerous musicals, festivals and comedy shows across the city. It is worth checking to see what is on and booking ahead before you arrive, as even in April, tickets sell fast!

For the best views, a hike up Arthur’s Seat will reward you with a full panorama and is a favourite spot for photographers. The round trip up and down will take around 2 hours and is well worth it, especially if the weather is good. This hike is also a dog-friendly activity in Edinburgh.

Princes Street is home to some of Edinburgh’s finest shops. A walk through the Princes Street Gardens will reveal an explosion of colour as the daffodils and cherry blossoms fill the air with their fragrance. Look out for the Scott Monument and the dozens of squirrels that will take peanuts from your hand.

There are numerous activities and attractions in Glasgow that cater specifically to families and kids. One of the top attractions is the Glasgow Science Centre, where children can engage in interactive exhibits and hands-on experiments, sparking their curiosity and love for science. Hallstatt, Austria

If you’re looking to explore a fairytale town, Hallstatt, nestled away in the Austrian Alps, is the perfect place for a springtime getaway.

April is part of the shoulder season, with a bit of unpredictable weather. The surrounding mountaintops might be dusted with snow or, alternatively, wildflowers might be bursting into bloom across the alpine slopes. However, this means that the town will be much quieter than the usually chaotic summer season. You’ll be able to score incredible deals on hotels and airfare.

Hallstatt is one of the best European cities to visit in April

Luckily, regardless of the weather, there’s plenty of things to do in Hallstatt. Wander around the picturesque Old Town, with colourful gingerbread houses and small local shops and restaurants to peruse. Consider renting a canoe and having a picnic lunch on the waters of Lake Hallstatt. April is a great time to spot adorable cygnets learning how to swim in the turquoise water.

To learn more about the town’s history, stop by Salzwelten Hallstatt, which, at 7,000 years old, is actually the world’s first ever salt mine! Nowadays, there’s all kinds of interesting features and artifacts to explore in the mine. This includes an ancient salt mummy that was discovered in the 1700s or Europe’s longest wooden slide (which is entirely indoors!).

To enjoy Hallstatt’s epic landscape, head to Dachstein Krippenstein, situated on a mountaintop. If the weather is still cold, you may be able to snowshoe or explore ice caves. If the weather is warm, there’s hiking trails and even via ferrata to take in the incredible views of the towering Alps.

Apart from Halstatt, there are numerous charming fairytale villages and towns in Austria waiting to be explored.

Helsinki, Finland

This charming capital of Finland holds a special place in my heart as one of my all-time favorite European destinations. Helsinki is an absolute gem for families looking for a holiday destination in Europe in April. With a vibrant mix of cultural experiences, outdoor fun, and educational activities, it’s the perfect spot for all ages to enjoy.

April in Helsinki marks the delightful transition from winter to spring. The days grow longer, the snow melts away, and the city starts to bloom, making it a pleasant time for outdoor activities. It’s also less crowded than the peak summer months, allowing families to explore with ease and comfort.

The Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is a must-visit in Helsinki. A short ferry ride away, it’s a great mix of history and open spaces where kids can run around. Linnanmäki Amusement Park, opening its doors in April, is a thrill haven with free entry (you pay for rides). Then there’s the Helsinki Zoo on Korkeasaari Island, home to diverse animals.

For a bit of learning combined with fun, Heureka Science Centre hits the mark with its hands-on exhibits and planetarium. Don’t miss the unique Finnish experience of public saunas for a dose of local culture. Löyly, for example, is kid-friendly and a great way to unwind. A green oasis in the city, Central Park (Keskuspuisto)is ideal for family picnics, walks, and bike rides.

Helsinki city center

If you’re there for the end of April, don’t miss the Vappu celebration. Filled with parades, outdoor picnics, music, various festivities, and fun for the whole family, it’s a joyous festival marking the arrival of spring.

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul, a massive city sprawl that straddles two continents is a gem for family holidays. April doesn’t have its summertime peak crowds, and the weather is warming up with plenty of places and events to keep entertained.

Spring officially begins in April in Istanbul, with the weather drifting between 8°C and 17°C. The days are mild and sunny, and the city gets painted in the vibrant colors of the annual Tulip Festival the whole month.

Besides the Istanbul International Film Festival and other city music festivals, celebrate your little ones during National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. It’s a day packed with music, events, and fun activities for kids every year at the end of April!

Wondering where to go in Europe in April? Istanbul is a great option.

The entire city is an open-air museum with historic mosques, palaces, and bazaars. No visit to Istanbul is complete without entering the historic district, Sultanahmet. This has world famous attractions like Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Grand Bazaar, a must on any Istanbul itinerary. Lisbon, Portugal

Built on seven hills and stretching along the river Tejo, this enchanting city includes everything to make it a perfect destination to visit in April. It boasts a warm, Mediterranean climate and an incredible culture with a rich history.

If you take a stroll around the city, you will realize that there is something interesting to see. Whether it’s just a miradouro – a beautiful square, an interesting tiled building or street art.

Lisbon

Besides being incredibly beautiful and charming, Lisbon is an ideal place to visit with family. There are so many activities you can do with your kids on a 2-day Lisbon itinerary. You can use a tuk-tuk around the city. Or take a Tram 28 – something which is incredibly fun and entertaining for kids.

I recommend visiting the Parque das Nações area where you can find one of the biggest and most impressive oceanariums in the world. Also, you should check out telecabine in the same area. This gives you an aerial lift of 30m over the Tagus River and some breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

This is also an amazing location for day trips from Lisbon. Sintra is the most magical place I have ever been to and has some of the most beautiful palaces in the world. You should visit Pena Palace or Quinta da Regaleira which has some unique gardens.

Also, you can visit Obidos, a medieval town just an hour away from Lisbon. There are many festivals around the year. In the Medieval Festival which happens in the summer, everyone is dressed as kings and queens and there are many activities organized which you can enjoy as a family.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Spring is a magical time in Europe, and if you’re planning a family holiday in April, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, should be on your list. Why April? As the first true month of spring in Slovenia, April brings warming temperatures and budding blossoms.

With longer daylight hours, exploring the city by foot or bike becomes an enjoyable adventure. You can start by checking out the Ljubljana Old Town; take a leisurely stroll, pop into quaint shops, and enjoy delicious local cuisine before heading to Ljubljana Castle with its panoramic views of the city. Make sure to stop by Triple Bridge and the iconic Dragon Bridge, and Preseren Square between the two. A venture further out will take you to the city’s largest park, Tivoli Park, perfect for a family picnic or a bike ride.

Ljubljana

To explore Ljubljana from a different perspective, consider taking a river cruise on the Ljubljanica, or if the weather is warm enough, stand-up paddleboarding on it. April is also the month of Slovenian Music Days, perfect for families eager to embrace local culture and enjoy musical events. You can also consider a food tour in Ljubljana.

While here, don’t forget to check out Slovenian Music Days in April, an ideal experience for families looking to immerse themselves in local culture and enjoy musical performances. Or take day trips from Ljubljana to explore the great outdoors in Triglav National Park, visit Adriatic coastline towns like Portorož and Piran. A hike at Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bled is another option.

With its charming streets, rich history, lively atmosphere and diverse offerings, Ljubljana is a playground for families and an ideal destination for an unforgettable spring break!

London, UK

London makes for a good option to visit in April. The temperatures are mild, and you can enjoy plenty of daylight hours for sightseeing. That said, you can’t avoid a few wet days with the famous April showers.

London is a major city and has so much history, that there are many London attractions to do with kids.  For the physically active kids try a Fat Tire Bike tour (a big hit for our crew) and spend time running and climbing in Trafalgar Square or Hyde Park.

London is amongst the best European cities to visit in April

Have a horse lover?  Check out the Queens Life Guard who are all on horseback and do a formal changing of the guard throughout the day. Have a history or war buff?  How about Churchill’s War Rooms or the Tower of London. They have souvenir shops for some of the best museum souvenirs from London.

The Tower also has an area with instruments of torture displayed for those enjoying a little of the dark side, too. For the princess in the family, there’s always touring a true castle of real-life royalty. And even afternoon tea at The Orangery Restaurant, which used to be the royal greenhouse! There are easy day trips like Hampton Court and Warner Bros. Harry Potter studios.

Honestly, we had such a variety of options that we nearly wore ourselves out in our 6 days.  We so enjoyed our time that returning to London is a regular topic of travel conversation… as if I needed more motivation to return!

Ohrid, Macedonia

Ohrid is very much off the radar around Balkans yet it is a surprisingly wonderful spring holiday destination. If you are looking for an affordable family vacation in a town located on the shores of one of Europe’s most beautiful lakes, Ohrid in North Macedonia is the place for you!

With crowded beaches all over Europe and cities where it’s hard to find a local among the sightseers, Ohrid offers a refreshing break away from over-tourism. Ohrid is a stunning, historic city on the shores of Lake Ohrid on the border with Albania and is a UNESCO Cultural and Natural World Heritage Site. The town offers countless attractions, including beautiful beaches, historical sights, a picturesque old town and an old bazaar, as well as numerous affordable restaurants perfect for a traditional family meal.

Ohrid is amongst the best European cities to visit in April

April marks the beginning of the tourist season in Ohrid. Most hotels and guesthouses that were closed over the winter open their doors and still offer very much off-peak prices. With the Balkans spring just around the corner (if not already there), the weather is mild, sunny and ideal for walks by the lake and hikes in the nearby Galicica Nature Park.

Ohrid is also a great town to explore by bike, which is a fantastic family activity! With numerous campsites and beaches are perfect for a family picnic. The historic fortress and the impressive Kaneo Church are of interest for travellers of all ages in Ohrid, even the little ones!

Ohrid, like the rest of North Macedonia, is extremely safe, with hospitable people, tons of culture to discover and delicious food. It maes a wonderful and relaxing spring holiday destination for families.

Paris, France

April is an absolutely fabulous time to visit Paris, a city of romance, beauty, and incredible food. Springtime is an almost magical time in the French capital. The gardens are starting to bloom and the locals are preparing for the relaxing summer months.

Although Paris is truly a year round destination, the shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October are the best times to visit. The weather is pleasant without being too extreme. And the prices for accommodations and tours are lower than you’ll find during the peak season from June to August.

You’ll have a number of relaxing activities in Paris, from enjoying a picnic along the River Seine to enjoying a savory galette and people-watching from a restaurant patio. If you encounter a rainy day, simply head inside to one of the world-class museum, like the Louvre Museum

Paris is one of the best cities in Europe to visit in April

No visit to Paris is complete without strolling through one or two of the incredible city parks. Of all the Parisian parks, the Jardin du Luxembourg is arguably the best garden to visit with kids.

Children can rent small motorized boats and sail them across the Grand Bassin duck pond. This tradition, P’tits Voiliers, dates back nearly a century, with children pushing their small sailboats across the pond using small, specialized sticks.

When visiting Paris in April, choose a hotel that is centrally located and also near to a metro station. It is important to understand the Paris Metro system. This way, you’ll be able to easily get around the city without having to spend hours on public transit or in taxis. A hotel in Montmartre or within a 20 minute walk of both the River Seine and another major Paris landmark should be central enough for most travelers.

Rome, Italy

Spring truly starts in Rome in April and despite frequent showers of rain, this is one of the months when Rome fills with blossoming plants. The weather in Rome in April is pleasant, with mild temperatures and a mix of sunny and rainy days. The hotel availability and prices are much better than the crowded summer time in Italy and Rome.

Easter is a busy time in Rome and you must book your tickets to the Colosseum and the Vatican in advance. If you are visiting Rome with kids, they would enjoy the Colosseum, the Forum and Palatine Hill. Other than the Easter weekend, the city gets lesser crowds than the peak summer months. So April is good for sightseeing.

Rome

Spring is the time when Rome’s famous piazzas come alive. So stroll through Piazza Navona, Campo de Fiori, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps. The Borghese Gallery is one of the most beautiful art museums in Rome. Rome has beautiful parks and there is no time like the spring to enjoy them. You have the grand Villa Borghese to enjoy. Rome in April is one of the best places in Italy to admire cherry blossoms! You can have a lovely picnic at the Botanical Gardens of Rome.

Easter celebrations are big in all cities across Italy. There are special masses and processions during Holy Week, from the Via Crucis procession and Good Friday services in the Colosseum to Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square. Also on April 21st, Rome celebrates it birthday with historical parades.

Venice, Italy

When you think of Venice, romance comes to mind. Roaming cobbled streets, snuggling in a gondola, and sharing a gelato while a clock tower rings through the city streets. But did you know Venice is family friendly as well?  Here are some tips to include the kids in your Venice adventure.

First, get there early.  We woke up early (my kiddos wake up early anyway) and headed into the streets of Venice at about 8:30 AM – early enough to have the city to ourselves.  We explored alleys, bridges, canals, and piazzas.  It felt like our own personal movie set.

best family holidays europeNext, do a Gondola ride.  It seems touristy, but my kiddos still reminisce about traveling the canals.  We took the first gondola of the morning.  Tourists took pictures of us because we were the only ones on the water. The kids felt like stars!

When traveling with kids, don’t over-plan things.  Besides the gondola ride, and a general idea of what we wanted to see, we didn’t really have an itinerary. We let the day, and our children, guide our adventure. But here is a 2-day Venice itinerary if you want to see the top attractions.

Sometimes leaving your schedule open leads to amazing experiences. For instance, we found the library (actually a church) from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. We had an adventure finding a shop that serves pasta in Chinese take-out containers. We followed people walking around with them until we found the secret location. You’ll see visiting the magnificent city of Venice really is an experience for the whole family!

Best Places to visit in Europe in April

Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve Coast in Portugal is one of the best European destinations when it comes to Family Travel. We’ve been there several times with kids age 0-8 and each of our stays has been fantastic.

Our favourite season to travel to the Algarve is early spring. It is already warm enough to spend hours at the beach but too early for the crowds to arrive. Also, off-season prices are helping with budgeting.

best family holidays europeApart from beach days with sand castles and flotsam treasure hunts, the Algarve coast offers a lot of activities for the entire family. The region is great to have walks. For example in the mountain backcountry around Monchique or at the Peninsula at Sagres.

The old stronghold and the nautical school in Sagres are good destinations for a day trip. Kids love to run around the fort and also to watch the fishermen that are spectacularly balancing on the cliffs to fish! Another nice activity for families is visiting the natural wetland park “Ria Formosa”.

It is one of the 7 natural wonders of Portugal and an important area for aquatic birds. It is also a stop-over point on the migration route between Europe and Africa. You can spot storks on plenty of occasions all along the coast. But especially in Faro where they are nesting on most chimneys.

The Lagos Science Centre and the Lagos Zoo are great destinations, too to spend a nice family day. You can also visit one of the big theme and water parks, you’re kids will love it!

Andalucia region, Spain

April is the perfect time to take a road trip through the south of Spain. The weather is comfortably warm, gradually getting warmer as the month progresses.

Start with a few days in Seville, immersing yourself in the vibrant culture of the region during the Semana Santa or Feria de Abril festivals. Both of these events are highlights in the Sevilliano calendar. Semana Santa (Holy Week) features parades displaying the Passion of the Christ. Statues are marched through the city accompanied by bands and nazarenos. If you are visiting Seville with kids, don’t miss out on attractions like Metropol Parasol, Plaza de Espana, and the Aquarium.

Two weeks after Semana Santa is the Feria de Abril (April Fair). The week-long festival attracts locals and visitors to the city. They come dressed in their beautiful flamenco dresses, and dance until the early hours in traditionally decorated casettas. Aside from the festivities, be sure to explore the city’s stunning architecture, including the Alcázar, Seville Cathedral and Girlada.

Seville Cathedral

From Seville, make your way to Cordoba, explore the old city centre, the Roman Bridge and of course the Mezquita. This iconic mosque-cathedral dates back to when southern Spain was under the rule of the Moors. The Mezquita seamlessly blends Arabic and Catholic architecture into the building you see today.

Your next stop is Granada, home to the magnificent Alhambra. This fortress-palace complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers panoramic views of the city and the Sierra Nevada mountains. The Generalife Gardens are a must-see, with their lush vegetation and beautiful water features providing a serene atmosphere as well as the intricately beautiful Nasrid Palaces.

Finally, finish your road trip to Spain’s southern coast to enjoy the warm spring sea air of Malaga. Here, you can relax on the beach, sample fresh seafood, and visit the Picasso Museum.

Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza is a popular European destination for travellers of all ages due to its warm weather, friendly locals and stunning beaches. April is a great time to visit Ibiza as it’s outside of the main tourist season, it’ll cost less and the weather is mild but still warm.

The high season for Ibiza is the summer months. As April sits outside of this there are less crowds, it’s more peaceful and it’s a cheaper time of year to visit. The temperature in Ibiza reaches highs of 22°c with lows of 11°c throughout April. Despite the more moderate temperatures there is plenty of sunshine to make up for any rainy spells.

Traditionally thought of as just a party destination, but there is so much more to Ibiza than the nightlife. Ibiza has something to suit all ages, from the castle, to stunning scenery or exploring the island by boat.

Ibiza Castle

Take a stroll through the cobbled streets to the top of the Ibiza Castle for unmissable views across the city. After making the trek to the top of the castle, relax when you reach the bottom by doing some boutique shopping and having lunch in one of the cafe’s along the harbour waterfront.

If you’re travelling to Ibiza with kids, the good news is that Ibiza is family friendly with welcoming locals, plenty of beaches. Hop on one of the island ferries to do a tour of the best beaches, take part in a selection of watersports, and enjoy a paella at one of the beachside restaurants.

Valencia and Costa Blanca, Spain

Valencia and Costa Blanca is an epic destination for families. There are many charming coastal towns in Spain within an easy day trip from Valencia that you can easily base yourself there. The best neighborhoods to stay in Valencia are around the old town. You are close to the top attractions and public transport hubs to reach nearby places.

You can rent a bike and go through Turia Gardens to Gulliver Park which is a fun playground for big and small. There are plenty of slides and climbing features that cover the giant body of Gulliver of Gulliver’s Travels lying on the ground.

Gulliver's Park, Valencia

If you prefer a beach holiday, get a chalet by the beach and take the bus to the center. The City of Arts and Sciences is fun for the whole family. Even though you don’t enter the museums, the recreational area is stunning with its impressive, modern architecture. You can also rent paddleboards to explore the waterscapes. There is also a free, interactive astronomy museum up the stairs which is super fun.

Besides Valencia, head to Alicante where you should visit the hilltop castle and enjoy the beaches. Spain’s Costa Blanca area is the coastline in Alicante province which has loads of fun activities to do with kids.

Small towns nearby worth exploring are Denia for its castle, Calpe for its sweeping beaches. And go to Peñón de Ifach which is a massive limestone rock jutting into the sea with a vibrant birdlife. The colorful beach town, Villajoyosa is worth visiting not only for its beauty but also for its chocolate. Make sure you take a tour of one of the chocolate factories to sample their yummy treats.

Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux is known for being the wine capital of France, but there is so much more to this city than just wine. In April, everything in the region starts to wake up after the winter hiatus.

The temperatures are warmer, and there are plenty of events happening around the region, such as Promenade en Scène in mid-April. This festival takes place on the main shopping street in Bordeaux, rue Sainte-Catherine, the longest shopping street in Europe. The program includes magic shows, dancing, music and plenty of street entertainment.

Towards the end of the month, there is the Blayais asparagus festival, where they celebrate asparagus cultivation. This vegetable has been grown there since the 15th century. And the festival has games, cooking demos, live bands and a children’s village with workshops.

As well as the organised events, Bordeaux has plenty of great museums and activities, for the whole family. Les Bassins des Lumières is a digital art museum in an old submarine base. For just over an hour, you’re treated to a sound and light show of artwork displayed on the walls and reflected in the water. The Cap Science is a museum completely dedicated to kids with plenty of hands-on workshops to keep them occupied.

Both of these are included in the Bordeaux City Pass, which gives you entry to 15 museums and attractions in Bordeaux, plus free use of all public transport. You can choose from 24, 48 or 72 hours, and it’s a cost-effective way for a family to explore Bordeaux.

Black Forest, Germany

The Black Forest in Germany is a fantastic place to visit with kids in April. The Black Forest region sits nestled at the south-western corner of Germany. It is bordered by France to the west and Switzerland to the South. Covered by a good layer of snow in the winter months, the spring melt reveals grassy pastures covering the low rolling mountains.

Pastel-colored houses and planter boxes bursting with blooms pop against the almost neon green of the countryside. The Black Forest is an outdoor destination with plenty for families to see and do.

Black Forest is one of the best places to visit in Europe in April

The small town of Triberg is best known for its cuckoo clocks. Children will be delighted by the animated scenes of animals and farmers which come to life to the song of the cuckoo each hour. At the top end of town take the short hike up to view Germany’s largest waterfall. Pick up some peanuts sold at the entrance to feed the hungry squirrels.

Stay at a Farm – from simple guest rooms to serviced apartments, the accommodation is on a working farm. Farm stays, known as a Bauernhofurlaub in German, are great value for money. They usually provide a hearty breakfast of farm fresh ingredients and children are often able to pet and feed the animals.

The Black Forest Open Air Museum shows visitors what life was like in the region in the past. See a blacksmith at work, a water mill grinding flour, and spend time playing in the indoor and outdoor play areas. There are also workshops that children can participate in such as woodworking and cooking.

Connemara, Ireland

Another great place to get away in April is the Connemara region of Ireland. Connemara is an excellent spot for families to explore in April. This time of year is just right – not too hot, not too cold, and not too crowded.

The weather is nice and comfy for getting outside, and there aren’t too many people around. It’s a time when Connemara really shines with fresh spring vibes!

There’s lots to see and do here! Make sure to check out Kylemore Abbey, a beautiful old monastery with stunning gardens. Driving around the Sky Road gives you amazing views of the coast – great for family photos! Don’t miss Clifden Castle either; it’s a remarkable old ruin that kids will love to explore.

Connemara is one of the best places to visit in Europe in April

Apart from these spots, Connemara is full of fun for the family. You can go for walks on the beach, see lots of cute animals on the farms, and maybe even catch a local music show.

Remember to pack for all kinds of weather – it can change fast here. And, if you’re driving, take it slow on the narrow roads. Most importantly, soak in the relaxed Irish vibe and enjoy your family time!

Northern Ireland

The obvious draw of Northern Ireland is The Giant’s Causeway but don’t be deceived, there is so much more than that on offer. Between exploring stunning beaches, a secret fairy garden, and castles, you won’t be bored for even a moment. If your family enjoys outdoorsy holidays, then this is the place for you.

Everyone can enjoy the Giant’s Causeway at their own level. Smaller kids will enjoy clambering over the flatter areas and peering in to rock pools. While those with slightly stronger ankles can pretend they’re mountain goats and climb to their hearts’ content. For those with even older, more adventurous kids, there are additional walks up the cliffs. The site itself is free (as long as you don’t park in their carpark or use their facilities). But the bus up and down to the sea does have a small fee.

Dunluce Castle is just perfect for letting little ones fall in love with history without even realizing it! While they run, climb and marvel at the setting, just watch how happy they are. And then relax in the lovely little cafe just opposite the castle entrance.

We explored White Rocks and Carrick a Rede. At White Rocks, we discovered a phenomenal sand wall that we spent hours climbing only to throw ourselves down! We also walked for miles enjoying the rocks and caves. After taking your kids for the thrilling walk over the Carrick a Rede rope bridge there is a rocky beach crying out for exploration.

Northern Ireland is one of the best places to visit in Europe in April

The Dark Hedges: Just before the famous Dark Hedges is a stately home (Gracehill House), which has created a small fairy village in the grounds. Take a walk and let your little ones discover the cutest little fairy houses ever. But don’t forget the raincoats because I can’t guarantee perfect weather!

Crete, Greece

Crete, a gorgeous island in Greece, is an excellent destination for families looking for some R&R. It offers various attractions for children. It is definitely one of the best Greek islands for a family holiday.

Many hotels in Crete are all-inclusive, giving you the peace of mind that you know exactly what you will be spending and not having to worry about meals at all. Many hotels also have built-in water parks – so you really don’t need to leave the hotel. You can find all-inclusive deals at different levels of luxury, not just 5-star hotels. Meals are usually buffet-style with a wide variety of food so even picky eaters will find something to eat.

Crete

All-inclusive resorts notwithstanding, sometimes you need to get out. Crete has many options for fun, including many water sports (especially for older kids) such as snorkeling, kayaks, and windsurfing.

Older kids will also enjoy a Greek cooking class! Younger kids can visit the local aquarium, go to Dinosauria Park (which is exactly what it sounds like). You can take them to the Fun Train, see the Palace of Knossos and see the animals at Amazonas Animal Park.

There are plenty of attractions for all age groups to enjoy together, such as the Acua Plus water park and the Dikteon Cave. Finally, you can rent bicycles from age 7. But you can also find a seat for the younger kids to attach to a parent’s bike.

Santorini, Greece

The stunning Santorini Island is an excellent choice for a perfect family trip in April, as this is the optimal time for a vacation on this enchanting Greek island. The weather is pleasantly mild, with temperatures ranging between 20 and 25 °C, making it an ideal time to explore the island without the summer crowds. Prices are surprisingly affordable, and even the best hotels in Santorini offer fantastic deals. Also, the conditions for activities are ideal, and on sunny days, you can easily enjoy a swim in the sea!

Santorini is one of the best places to visit in Europe in April

In April, the entire island is in bloom, and the beautiful natural landscape is perfect for hiking and other sports. There are also fantastic tours for families, such as a walk along the caldera with spectacular views of the sea or a hike up to Skaros Rock. For families with children, there are plenty of attractions suitable for all ages on Santorini. The Ancient Thera archaeological site provides insight into the island’s history, recommended for all those interested in history.

A highlight for families with kids is the Lost Atlantis Experience, an interactive museum with a 9-D cinema. But that’s not all! The unique beaches, like the Red Beach and Perissa Beach, are perfect for relaxing with the family and engaging in water activities. The best travel tips for Santorini also include a boat tour to explore the volcanic islands, which families with children will also love. Santorini does make for a great addition to Greece itinerary with kids.

Dalmatian coast, Croatia

For those seeking a trip to Europe in spring, April is an excellent time to visit Croatia. This is when the weather is pleasant and there are fewer crowds around the popular cities. Croatian cities like Dubrovnik, Split and national parks like Plitvice Lakes can be super crowded in summer months.

Also, boat tours, day trips, restaurants and bars are all open in Croatia in April. The hotel prices are not at their peak. Accommodation prices, car rental, even tourist attractions are 30-50% cheaper than the busy months of July and August. The weather is perfect for sightseeing.

So focus on Split, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Ston and Dubrovnik in the Dalmatian coast of Croatia in April. You can visit one of the popular Croatian islands like Hvar or Brac, but do note that the ocean is too cold for swimming as are the beaches.

The weather is perfect for walking the walls in Dubrovnik old town, and for taking the cable car up the Srd Hill. It is also good for enjoying the old town of Split. The road drive from Dubrovnik to Split or the other way round, via Makarska Riviera, is not to be missed. You can add a stop at Ston Croatia to climb the ‘Great Walll of Europe’.

It is possible to take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes from either Split or Zagreb, but I would recommend an overnight trip to appreciate the area fully. For the best routes and scenic spots, check out my travel guide on Plitvice Lakes national park

Dordogne, France

April is the perfect time to visit the stunning region of Dordogne in southwest France. As spring arrives, this charming destination comes alive with vibrant colours and pleasant weather. It’s the ideal time to explore without the heavy tourism that the summer months bring.

Spring is my favourite time of year in Dordogne. The temperatures are warm, and all the attractions open back up fully from their winter hours. You’ll be able to visit popular destinations without the crowds and enjoy the beautiful scenery without the heat. Plus, with a wide range of exciting activities and attractions, there’s something for everyone in Dordogne.

April is the perfect time to visit Dordogne

One of the must-visit places is the Lascaux caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its prehistoric cave paintings. Families and kids will love exploring the medieval streets of Sarlat and strolling through the beautiful gardens of Marquessac. Don’t forget to visit a French castle whilst you are here too. Chateau de Milandes and Bordeilles Chateau are both beautiful, with activities for children too.

Head to Brantome, known as the Venice of Perigord, for a stunning day out and visit the monolithic church and caves. For a unique experience, take a canoe ride along the Dordogne River or spend a day at one of the many lake and river beaches. If you want to explore a larger town or city, head to Bergerac to see the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac or Perigueux and wander around museums and shops.

As with any travel plan, it’s essential to be prepared. While April can bring unpredictable weather, packing some layers and a waterproof jacket will ensure you’re comfortable no matter what.

Malta

Malta stands out as one of the best places to visit in Europe in April for so many reasons. This charming Mediterranean archipelago, comprised of three main islands—Malta, Gozo, and Comino. It offers a huge range of attractions and activities that make any family holiday special.

Firstly, Malta boasts a rich history dating back thousands of years. Families can explore ancient temples, medieval cities, and historic sites like the UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital, Valletta.

With its crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, Malta also offers many family-friendly beaches. The shallow waters are perfect for children to splash around in, and the adults can relax on the sandy shores. Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay, and Ramla Bay in Gozo are just a few examples of the picturesque beaches that families can enjoy.

Malta

The all-year-round pleasant weather also makes it an ideal destination for families seeking outdoor activities, whether it’s exploring historical sites, hiking, or enjoying water sports. Just make sure you pack comfortable clothes for exploring.

Safety is important when travelling with family so you will be happy to know that Malta is known for its safe and welcoming environment. The locals are friendly, and the island is considered one of the safest destinations in Europe. This adds an extra layer of comfort for families travelling with small children!

Malta is easily accessible from various European cities, with a well-connected airport and ferry services. The small size of the islands also makes it convenient to explore different attractions without spending too much time on transportation.

South coast, Iceland

Iceland emerges from the winter hibernation into spring in April. In April, the landscape gets greener in the south coast of Iceland. The days grow longer, temperatures start to rise, and rainfall lessens. However, April weather in Iceland can be incredibly erratic, so be prepared for cold and windy days.

In April, Iceland experiences between 13 to 16 hours of daylight. This is good to spend a day sightseeing the top attractions in Reykjavik: Hallgrimskirkja, the Sun Voyager Statue etc. You can take a tour to the famous stops of Golden Circle route: Thingvellir national park, Geysir Geothermal Area and the Gullfoss waterfall.

The south coast is easy to access in April. There are 2 famous Iceland waterfalls located here: the stunning Skogafoss where you get to go near the falls and enjoy the mist all around. And Seljalandsfoss which is unique because there is a path to go behind the falls.

Iceland is a place where you can combine incredible natural landscapes with the thrill of adventure. Book a glacier hiking trip on Vatnajokull or Solheimajokull glacier. You can also visit the Katla ice cave, one of the top attractions in South Iceland. This ice cave is a 45-minute drive from the town of Vik. Katla ice cave is a sub-glacial cave beneath the Katlajokull, an icefall of the beautiful Myrdalsjokull glacier.

Reynisfjara in Iceland

Reynisfjara is the most famous black sand beach in Iceland, adjacent to Vik. This beach with its unique basalt columns and roaring ocean waves is not just accessible, but one of the highlights of Iceland South Coast.

Ticino, Switzerland

April is a fantastic time to visit Ticino, southern canton of Switzerland that’s known for its mild climate and Mediterranean-like flare. While most of the country still experiences somewhat cool temperatures, Ticino is already basking in the sun. It offers incredible opportunities for hiking and mountain biking at lower elevations where snow has already melted.

Another fun thing to do in Ticino in April is explore nearby valleys like Valley Maggia and Valley Verzasca. This is a perfect time to enjoy the nature and see magnificent waterfalls in their full glory, as they are felt by the snowmelt from the Alps. After enjoying the outdoors, make sure to stop on one of typical Ticino “grottos” where you can enjoy some of the most traditional dishes from the region.

Combine your outdoor activities with stops at nearby towns. For example, if you are headed to Valley Maggia, make sure to visit Ascona, a photogenic town along the shores of Lake Maggiore. Ascona boasts a colourful old town with a clock tower, small boutique stores, and gelato shops along the cobblestone streets that look like towns in Italy.

Ticino is a great place to visit in Europe in April

Another great stop in Ticino is Morcote, a small hamlet along Lake Lugano that’s been called one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. You can reach Morcote by the boat from Lugano to admire its beauty and tranquil atmosphere. And make sure to stop in Bellinzona, the capital of Ticino that’s home to a trio of castles where you can learn the history of the region, and later walk around the beautiful old town.

Tuscany, Italy

April is one of the best months for traveling to Tuscany, Italy. April brings spring blossom and sunny weather to Tuscany, while many hotels, B&Bs, and farm stays reopen. Daily average temperatures in Tuscany in April hover around 18-19C (64-66 F). There is plenty of sunshine throughout the month. Some raindrops at the beginning of the month are possible, though.

Tuscan countryside gets gorgeously colorful in April, preceded by nature wake-up in March after a cold and hibernating winter. The best way to explore this stunning region is to take a road trip to Tuscany. Fly to Florence or Pisa, rent a car at the airport, and start road-tripping Tuscany. If you are traveling with your kids, you will have one of the best road trips of your life.

Pisa in Italy

Wander the streets of the historic center of Florence with kids (a World Heritage Site) and tour the Uffizi Gallery, Academia Gallery, and Boboli Gardens. See the Square of the Miracles and climb the Pisa Leaning Tower in Pisa. Head to San Gimignano to see ‘Manhattan of the Middle Ages’. Don’t forget to get gelato at Gelateria Dondoli (a world gelato-making champion) in San Gimignano. Go to Viareggio for some beach time.

Don’t miss out on visiting Siena. Tuscan cities like Florence, Siena, and Pisa are impressive. But Tuscany is also a region of striking landscapes. You will make multiple stops on your Tuscany road trip. You will want to admire and take numerous photos of the stunning Tuscan hills, fields, vineyards, olive tree groves, and cypress-lined roads. After all, Tuscany is famed as one of the most beautiful regions in the world for a reason.
