Top 10 Rome Italy Landmarks

Let’s take a look at some of the top landmarks in Rome. These are must-visits for anyone planning to visit the Italian capital. If you think of iconic landmarks of Italy or even Europe, Rome definitely trumps Florence.

Colosseum

If we are talking about historical landmarks in Rome Italy, the Colosseum tops the chart! This world-famous arena played host to the gladiators, warriors who fought to the death for the entertainment of the Roman crowds. The Colosseum has been the subject of countless films, so this is an essential stop for any movie fan. Colosseum is the top attraction in all of Italy, so it is a must on any Italy itinerary.

Colosseum is the most famous landmark in Rome Italy.

You can book your tickets online (visit coopculture.it) for the main part of the Colosseum. This ticket covers the trio – Colosseum, Forum and the Palatine Hill – and allows entry over 2 consecutive days. But it is better to take a guided tour with priority access to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill.

Roman Forum & The Palatine Hill

Rome is famous for its historic culture and if you’re a fan of ancient statues and temples, the Roman Forum is the place to be. This was the site of discussion and debate in ancient Rome and remains one of the top tourist destinations. This is a fantastic first stop when in Rome, visiting the Roman Forum is like stepping back in time.

The Palatino or Palatine Hill does offer impressive views of both the Colosseum at one end and the Forum on the other. According to the many myths and legends surrounding Rome, it was here that the city was founded in 753 BC.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon, an ancient Roman temple and now a church, can be found in Rome’s Pigna area. This building’s iconic pillars have significantly influenced modern architecture. There is always an evening buzz in the square right outside the Pantheon.

Vatican City

The Vatican City is an iconic Roman landmark. Home to the Pope, this area is a site of religious and cultural significance. There are some truly breathtaking works of art on display here, including the Sistine Chapel and the Rafael Rooms.

Vatican Museum and St. Peters Basilica are a must visit landmark on your Rome trip.

However, the area can get extremely busy,  so you do need to figure how best to visit the Vatican City. Make sure you buy tickets in advance and arrive in plenty of time to avoid disappointment. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are visited on one ticket. But you can also take a guided tour to explore the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s.

Castel Sant’Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo is just a 10-minute walk from the Vatican City. It’s a historic fortress which offers incredible views of the city and the Tiber River. There are also plenty of excellent restaurants nearby, the perfect opportunity to sample some of that famous Italian cuisine. Try out some Spaghetti Carbonara or Cacio e Pepe. Delicious!

Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain was built in 1762. It is still one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks and a must visit attraction as part of your Rome itinerary. Visit this stunning fountain early to enjoy it without the daytime crowds. Don’t forget to toss a coin over your shoulder for good luck! It’s one of the most beautiful fountains in the world and I feel lucky to have visited it in person.

Don't miss a visit to Trevi Fountain, a historical landmark in Romme.

Spanish Steps

From the Trevi Fountain, you can head to the famous Spanish Steps. Climb to the top for views of Via dei Condotti, Rome’s luxury shopping street. Here, you can shop for items from the world’s best designers. If high-fashion boutiques is not your thing, you will find products like Italian leather handbags even in small shops on alleys branching out from the Trevi Fountain or Piazza Navona. Rome is the perfect place to treat yourself or buy an Italian gift for a loved one.

Piazza Navona

In Rome’s Campus Martius district, you’ll find Piazza Novana. This large, open-air square was once the site of athletic displays and circus performances. Now, it’s a tourist hotspot with plenty to see and do. This is one of my favourite places to visit in Rome, it’s packed full of fantastic bars and restaurants and there’s always a buzzing atmosphere.

Villa Borghese Gardens

These wonderful gardens can be found near the Spanish Steps, and they offer an ideal spot to relax and get some respite from the hot sun. The gardens are filled with flowers and plants, and the Galleria Borghese is home to historic artwork by famous painters such as Caravaggio.

Trastevere

Trastevere is a charming neighbourhood known for its narrow streets and bohemian vibe. Here, you can visit the stunning Santa Maria, one of Rome’s oldest churches. This is an excellent place to stay for dinner, visit a traditional trattoria like Osteria da Zi Umberto or Tonnarello. The neighbourhood comes alive in the evenings with a lively atmosphere.

Tips to see the best of Rome Landmarks

Get Up Early

You might be tempted to sleep in while you’re on holiday, but if you want to make the most of your visit to Rome then you have to get out of your bed early! This way, you’ll have the full day to explore this wonderful city, and you’ll beat the crowds and queues as an added bonus! Rome can be extremely busy with tourists, so the best way to avoid the crowds is to resist the temptation to sleep in and get up bright and early!

Dress Comfortably

Rome is packed full of amazing things to see. The best way to experience this city is to walk. If you’re planning a stroll around the Eternal City, make sure you’re dressed appropriately. Wear comfortable shoes; sore feet are the last thing you want when you’re exploring the expanse of the city.

Dress comfortably for Rome sightseeing. The cobbled pathways around Piazza Navona.

If you’re visiting Rome in the summer months, remember that the weather can get extremely hot. Make sure to wear loose, breathable clothes. Also, always remember to stay hydrated, take breaks and rest in the shade regularly. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting sunburnt or developing heat stroke.

Plan Your Stops

It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of potential things to see and do when you’re in Rome. This is why planning ahead is so important. It means you’ll be able to do everything you want to do and you won’t risk running out of time. There’s nothing wrong with simply heading out and seeing where you end up. However, if you truly want to make the most of your time in Rome, I highly recommend drawing up an itinerary to see the famous landmarls of Rome.

Hydration

Carry a refillable water bottle and use Rome’s free drinking fountains, called nasoni. These are amazing, especially if you are there in the summer when it can get hot and dry.

Dress Code

Many religious sites, including St. Peter’s Basilica, require modest attire (shoulders and knees covered), so be aware of that and be respectful.

Evening Strolls

Rome is magical at night. Revisit some of the famous landmarks in Rome like the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain when they’re beautifully illuminated.

Safety Concerns

Do be careful with your bags and wallets, though. Rome has a high number of pickpockets, so always remain vigilant.

Transportation advice for Rome

Rome is best explored on foot but if you need to take some form of transport, here are a few tips:

  • Metro: Use the Metro for longer distances, such as between Vatican City and the Colosseum (Line A connects these areas).
  • Buses and Trams: Rome’s buses and trams are useful but can be slow during rush hours.
  • Taxis and Rideshares: Taxis are available but relatively expensive. Uber operates in Rome, though it’s limited compared to taxis.
  • Walking: Most landmarks are close together, making walking the best option.

Final thoughts on historical landmarks in Rome

Rome is one of my favourite places to visit. I’d go back there time and time if I had the chance. It has a certain wow factor that cannot be duplicated. As you can see from the list of Roman landmarks above, there’s an incredible number of things to see and do in the Italian capital. Make sure you pick the right hotel in Rome as per your budget and interests to get the most of your trip.

There’s something on offer for everyone, whether you like history, food or fashion. If you like all 3, Rome truly is the perfect destination. Have a wonderful trip!
