Interlaken is a beautiful Swiss town in the middle of the Bernese Alps, a must on any Bernese Oberland itinerary. It is famous for its mild fall weather and stunning scenery. The place is also great for outdoor sports like hiking, paragliding, skiing, mountain biking, bungee jumping, and skydiving.

23. Ticino, Switzerland

For a great place to visit in Europe in October, if you’re looking for the sunshine, then make your next destination to the Ticino canton of Switzerland. Located in the south of the country, Ticino is home to some amazing hiking locations, turquoise coloured lakes and palm trees everywhere you look. We recommend visiting in October as the weather is good and most local activities are still open. But it’s definitely less touristic during this month.

Weather: Ticino is known for being the sunniest location in Switzerland. For October, the weather is usually between 9°C and 21°C. Making it still often t-shirt weather in the cities, but colder in the mountains. It can of course rain during this season, so you should still be prepared.

Ascona town

Things to see and do: There is a wide range of activities in Ticino, such as from watersports, paragliding, hiking and cycling. For those with children, you can also visit attractions like the Swiss Miniature, get up close and personal with unique birds at the Falconeria, and discover the Splash and Spa waterpark

October is the perfect month for exploring local villages, such as to the picturesque Sonogno and Foroglio. There’s also a wide range of waterfalls in Ticino worth seeing with your own eyes! Then head to the village of Ascona for dinner on the promenade next to Lake Maggiore

24. London, UK

While London has a reputation for being gloomy all year round, it’s still wonderful to visit in October. For the most part, London is cloudy with rain, but you’ll experience pockets of sunshine throughout the day.

Weather: The average high for this time of the year is 16°C. The average overnight low will see temperatures fall to 10°C.

If you are looking for best cities in Europe to visit in October, London is a good choice.
London Eye

Things to see and do: October is when you’ll start to see fall foliage, especially in Hyde Park, which is free to visit and perfect for families and couples. You can stroll through the park and enjoy the flowers, or you can rent a boat on the Serpentine, the 16-hectare pond in the park.

Encountering a rainy day in London? There are so many free museums to visit, such as the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, and Victoria and Albert Museum. There are plenty of attractions in London with kids besides museums. Potterheads can go on an interactive Harry Potter tour around central London with a guide.

For window shopping, head over to Harrod’s, London’s most famous and high-end department store. If you don’t plan to shop for anything, at least buy a Harrod’s teddy bear as a souvenir; the bears come dressed up as guardsmen and beefeaters. Children will love the bears as a gift!

Another must-do activity is to get on the London Eye, the 443-foot-long Ferris wheel overlooking the River Thames and Big Ben. The London Eye also has a Champagne Experience, book it during sunset to skip the line and enjoy a glass of bubbly!

  1. Great list of places in Europe to see in October, there are so many inspirations.
I would probably pick the Scottish Borders or Lake Bled for the landscape, and Paris as a city! Of course, my beautiful Riga is always my Nr 1 destination! If you happen to be in Latvia again during the autumn you have to visit Sigulda!

    Thanks for sharing this!

  2. I totally agree with you. A perfect list. I loved seeing Aix en Provence on your list. Once I visited in early December and luckily the temperature during the day was in the 50’s perfect for me. I love getting the Cassilion Candy when I visit.

  3. September and October have always been my favorite months to visit Europe as air fares and hotels are cheaper. You also avoid all the families vacationing over summer break. I also think you have a better chance of good weather than you do in the spring.

  4. I loved seeing Riga on this list. Just yesterday we were discussing a fall trip to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Now I definitely thing we will!

  5. Don’t distract me from what I have already planned a couple of domestic trips. Getting distracted by Europe could be risky to the ongoing travel plans. Haha!
