Limassol, Cyprus

If you’re looking for a warm winter vacation in Europe, Limassol in Cyprus is the perfect destination. The winter weather is especially pleasant, with daytime temperatures around 15–20°C (59–68°F), making it easy to explore without heavy coats or constant rain. Plus, hotel prices drop significantly during this season. So that you can enjoy luxurious resorts like the Four Seasons or Parklane at excellent rates, with heated pools, top-tier spas, and stunning sea views.

Limassol blends a vibrant city atmosphere with stunning natural scenery and an evolving culinary scene. Start your day with coffee at one of the city’s best cafés, like Astry or Wagmi Cafe. Then head out for shopping on Anexartisias Street, where you’ll find both boutique shops and local brands. You’ll find plenty of things to do in Limassol, from strolling along the seaside promenade or exploring the charming old town, to visiting the marina, dining at excellent restaurants, or enjoying the nightlife.

Crete, Greece

If you are looking for a winter sun destination in Europe away from the crowds but still warm, think about visiting Crete in Greece. A wonderful Mediterranean island with a lot of outdoor activities that you can do year-round including the beach. It is one of the best Greek islands for families.

If you want something charming and historic, check out the harbor scene and old town of Chania. This old town with its narrow streets and buildings with Venetian charm was established in the early 14th century. For an even more historic touring, visit Knossos, which features on most itineraries for Crete. This is the largest archaeological site with ruins and some reconstructed areas. There are murals depicting the sophisticated and colorful lifestyle of the early Minoan civilization on the island.

If you are more of an outdoor adventurer, then you can hike. Or go canyoning, mountain climbing and even caving in the rugged and gorgeous landscapes and explore fantastic natural environments around the island. Foodies will love the amazing wine grown on the island, fresh seafood, local cheese, olive oil, and locally grown produce and meats that inspire regional Greek and Cretan specialties.

If outdoor adventure is not enough fun for your trip to Greece with kids, then check out Aquaworld in Hersonisos, walk with dinosaurs at Dinosauria Park, explore the underground Dikteon cave. Or how about a water park fun at Limnoupolis just outside Chania town? These kid-friendly venues are perfect to do with children in mind.

Rhodes, Greece

If you love UNESCO heritage sites and incredible medieval fortifications and ruins without the crowds, December is the perfect time to visit Rhodes island in Greece.

One of the things I love about visiting during this period is that it feels more culturally authentic. Most of the big package tour hotels close at the end of October. It makes it possible to score a reservation easily at boutique hotels in Rhodes Old Town. You’ll find rooms at a fraction of the price during the summer season at places like Hotel Ellique, Porolithos Boutique Hotel and Elaia-Fos.

While in Rhodes, the top 3 things to do include wandering the UNESCO-listed Rhodes Old Town, with a visit to the Palace of the Grand Master. Inside this museum, you’ll see a range of Knights’ weaponry, mosaics, and architectural details of the palace not visible from the outside. Next, you’ll want to visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes for a closer look at statues, mosaic floors, and other finds from Rhodes’ ruins.

Lastly, I highly recommend a trip to the Acropolis of Lindos (in Lindos). The Acropolis is quite well preserved for a ruin dating back to the 10th century BC, with spectacular views over the sea.  In the winter months, hours are typically shorter, usually from 8:30 to 3:30 pm.

A few packing tips, items that you can layer (a light-weight and a medium-weight) sweaters make it easy to adjust to changes in temperature.  In December you can generally expect lows around 52°F/11°C with highs of 61°F/16°C.  I also recommend an umbrella or rain jacket as this month can see its share of rainy days.

If you’re looking for a dose of more European Culture in the month of December, why not add on one of the warmest Christmas markets in Europe to your trip?

Sicily, Italy

Taking a trip to Sicily in December offers a blend of mild winter weather, rich culture, and festive spirit, making it an excellent destination for travellers. This is especially good for families looking for something different over the winter holidays. With relatively mild temperatures, typically ranging from 10 – 16°C, crisp sunshine and fewer crowds, you may still be able to wear shorts though pack a jumper in the cooler evenings.

Tourist sites are more enjoyable without the summer tourist throngs. Visiting the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the Greco-Roman Amphitheatre in Catania, hiking up Mount Etna, or touring Palermo’s historic markets can be explored in relative peace. The towns and cities are festooned with festive lights and nativity scenes, or presepi, adding to their charm. Children will love Christmas markets in cities like Catania and Siracusa, which often have carousels and rides, sweet treats, and local crafts.

For family-friendly activities, visit the interactive museums in Palermo, and take a gentle hike on Etna’s lower slopes. Or explore coastal towns like Cefalù with their charming decorations and quieter beaches. If the weather is calm, take a boat trip around the UNESCO Heritage Aeolian Islands of Stromboli, Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Filicudi, Panarea and Alicudi.

When packing, bring layers – a warm coat for evenings, jumpers or cardigans, and comfortable walking shoes. Rain is possible, so a lightweight waterproof jacket or umbrella is advisable.

December is also a time of food and festivity. Think roasted chestnuts, arancini, Sicilian sweets like cannoli, and hearty seasonal dishes. With its welcoming locals, rich traditions, and scenic beauty, Sicily in December offers an off-season gem full of warmth and culture.

Malta

If you are planning a winter vacation in Europe, the island country of Malta on the Mediterranean Sea is perfect for you. It is famous for its pristine sandy beaches, warm climate, prehistoric archaeological sites and delicious regional delicacies. There are plenty of things to do and see in Malta for a perfect holiday in December.

During December, the weather is much warmer than in the rest of the European countries, with mostly sunny days and clear blue skies. The average Malta temperature in December is around 15 – 17°C. At night, the temperature hovers above 10 – 11°C. Also, there will be an abundance of Christmas activities happening all around the island. Many of the houses, shops and streets will be decorated with Christmas trees, decorations and lights.

Malta is a great choice amongst warm winter destinations in Europe

Start your Maltese adventure with a visit to the fortified city of Valletta. Malta’s UNESCO-listed capital is best explored on a walking tour. A visit to St John’s Co-Cathedral is an absolute must. Founded in the 16th century, the incredibly ornate interior of the cathedral is one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Europe. Afterwards, admire the breathtaking panoramic view of the picturesque Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Visitors gather here to watch the ceremonial gunfire that takes place daily at noon.

Head towards Blue Lagoon on Comino Island or the Golden Sand Bay on the mainland. Both beaches are fantastic spots for taking a swim or simply soaking in the sun lying on the beach. While the water in winter is a bit cold for water sports, you can take a hike around the island.

Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve is one of the sunniest regions in Europe and should be considered if you are looking for a winter sun destination in Europe. During summer the temperatures usually soar above 30°C upto 40°C. This may be fine to take a nap in the shade on the beach but it’s not what you’re looking for if you have a more active vacation in mind.

Planning your visit in winter gives you many advantages. With an average temperature of 16-20°C and clear blue skies, the area is much more enjoyable. Certainly for an active vacation and it hardly ever rains. We visited all the main tourist attractions along the coast and hiked along the coast and in the beautiful natural parks. We heard from locals that these areas are unpleasantly crowded in the summer.

Algarve coast is one of the warmest places in Europe in December

Most streets are narrow and most parkings are small. This adds to the charm of the area but can turn into a traffic nightmare in peak season. It is also much more pleasant to wander through the narrow picturesque streets of the charming villages without the hordes of tourists in high season.

One more advantage is that you will be able to find some great deals on hotels and other accommodation. It may be not the right time for water sport activities in winter but the boat trips that go along the spectacular rugged coastline and inside the caves go all year round. Take a boat around 4 PM, dress warmly, and enjoy the warm colors of the sunset being cast on the cliffs during the golden hour. Algarve is definitely one of the best warm winter destinations in Europe. It also makes for a good day trip from Lisbon Portugal.

Lisbon, Portugal

Hear me out, but winter is my absolute favourite time of year to visit Lisbon. The mood is relaxed, flights and hotels are cheaper. While there are fewer daylight hours, you can watch some spectacular sunsets from its Miradouros (viewpoints). Lisbon’s winter weather is changeable but mild, with daytime temperatures averaging between 14 and 18°C. December can bring showers, but I got the perfect warm, sunny day on my last visit just before Christmas.

Even off-season there’s so much to do, made easier without the crowds the peak summer months bring. From riding the pretty yellow tram up Elevador da Bica to exploring the Oceanário de Lisboa aquarium, there’s something for all ages and weathers. Impressive locations like Arco da Rua Augusta and Castelo se S. Jorge were high on my Lisbon itinerary, as well as admiring the beautiful porcelain tiles and stunning view at Miradouro de Santa Luzia.

From late November you’ll see festive lights twinkling and Christmas markets popping up. Wonderland Lisboa in Eduardo VII Park is the perfect spot for yuletide ice skating and sweet treats during a long weekend getaway. For food, don’t skip Timeout Market for choice and value and grab a box of pastel de natas from Fabrica da Nata – trust me, don’t just buy one!

When packing your bag, include a light raincoat for the unpredictable weather, comfy shoes for walking Lisbon’s steep cobbled streets and sunglasses for the low winter sun. Plus, take a secure crossbody bag to keep your belongings safe while you explore.

Madeira, Portugal

For those craving sunshine during Europe’s chilly winter months, consider visiting Madeira in winter. Though part of Portugal, the Atlantic island of Madeira sits closer to the coast of Africa than to mainland Europe. Enjoy the island’s subtropical climate, with average winter daytime temperatures between 16–20°C (61–68°F). There’s plenty of sun, especially on the island’s south side. While it’s not ideal beach weather, it’s perfect for other things to do in Madeira – hiking, sightseeing, visiting natural pools and vineyards, and soaking in sea views without the summer crowds.

In winter, be sure to explore Madeira’s famous levada trails along old irrigation channels, visit the natural pools at Porto Moniz, and take in dramatic coastal views at São Lourenço (by boat or on foot). Spend a day exploring the capital city Funchal, riding the cable car to Monte Palace Gardens and taking the toboggan ride back down after exploring these beautiful botanic gardens! Madeira’s dolphin and whale watching excursions typically run year-round.

Families can dive into Madeira’s rich heritage by visiting the unique, thatched roofed Casas de Santana or the interactive Madeira Story Centre in Funchal. Explore the São Vicente Caves or enjoy hands-on science exhibits and saltwater aquarium at Funchal’s Natural History Museum.

Packing tips: Bring lightweight layers, a fleece or sweater, good walking shoes, and a waterproof jacket for occasional rain. Many hotels have heated pools, and you might want to take a dip in a natural lava pool, so don’t forget your swimwear!

Almeria, Spain

Visiting Almeria Spain, tucked away in the southeastern region of the country and facing the mediterranean is ideal in winter. You’ll practically be far removed from tourists and just hanging out with locals in the older sections of town, the long expansive beaches and cool places to discover in the city center.

Almeria is best known for one of the largest Moorish fortresses in Spain with well-maintained ruins that protected the city from many invaders to the coastal areas. Expansive views, beautiful gardens and public areas depict that grand scale of this site even in ruins from Islamic to Christian dominance of the area. You can discover hidden gems with a private walking tour with a local guide.

Almeria, Spain is one of the hot places in Europe in December

A nice drive along the coastlines will get you wonderful beaches, seafood restaurants and even pristine coastline parks that are protected coastal areas from development. The old town city center is also filled with majestic architecture, beautiful old squares and a grand cathedral that looks like a fortress on its own.

Winter is off season but really perfect for European cold and the region typically hovers around the mid 60s and lows around the high 40s in Fahrenheit. With comfortable weather you can tour outside without heavy coasts and enjoy the mediterranean coast here in Southeastern Spain.

Balearic Islands, Spain

I could talk for ages about why Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca, Menorca, and the smaller Balearic Islands are a great idea for a family-friendly getaway all year round. However, if I had to choose my favorite season to experience all their beauty, that would be winter. Balearic islands are on of the best warm winter destinations in Europe.

There are many reasons why you can’t go wrong with one of these Mediterranean sea-bathed micro-paradises in the low season. The mild weather of these islands makes them a perfect winter sun destination in Europe to be enjoyed. They have a couple of great Unesco recognized diving spots. Their turquoise waters are always an excellent idea, and one the kids will particularly like! The crazy tourist crowds that populate the main islands in spring and summer are gone. Therefore prices are slightly more affordable and you can enjoy them quietly, without the party-goers and queues everywhere.

If you need some guidance to choose a Balearic Island to stay for a few days or weeks, here is what the main 4 are known for. Mallorca is a great choice for city people, bikers and people in love with beaches and wine. A short relaxing break over 4 days in Mallorca works well.

Menorca is always a good idea if snorkeling is on your list, as well as spending a few quiet days with your family without any distractions. Formentera is the most secluded and difficult to reach, hence its raw nature. Ibiza, once the youngster crowds are gone, is excellent for sunset and hippie culture lovers. Check out my article on the Balearic Islands in winter.

Canary Islands, Spain

If you’re looking for a warm winter destination in Europe, the Canary Islands in Spain is a great option. Located in the Atlantic ocean south-west from the Spanish coast the islands have a comfortable climate – warm in winter with average day temperatures between 17 to 21°C.

There are 7 islands that form the archipelago: Tenerife is the most popular island. Gran Canaria is second most popular island. Rest are LanzaroteFuerteventuraLa PalmaLa Gomera and El Hierro. Despite their proximity, each island has a different landscape and vegetation. You can base yourself on one island and explore the nearby islands by doing day trip. Or stay on different islands for a couple of days each. The Canary Islands have a good connection with the mainland. To move between the islands you can use local ferries that connect the nearby islands.

Canary Islands, Spain is one of the warmest places in Europe in December

Tenerife is probably one of the best islands for families with small children. There are nice sandy beaches, shallow water entrances, sandy bottom and relatively flat sea (at the most popular beaches for swimming). The main attraction to visit with kids on Tenerife is Loro park. It has a big area divided into several zones where you can see dolphins, orcas, penguins, parrots, seals, and more.

If you like hiking we’d recommend spending a couple of days on La Gomera – the greenest island of the archipelago. There are many hiking trails that connect different parts of the island; through banana plantations, national parks and along the sea with some stunning lookouts.

If you like an adventure – go to Gran Canaria or Lanzarote where you can explore some old volcano craters and admire the incredible landscape. Lanzarote winter itinerary includes the most incredible natural attractions like Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio and Jardin de Cactus. Or a Gran Canaria itinerary where you explore the natural wonders of this island and small towns.

Cartagena, Spain

Cartegena is located in the Region of Murcia, south-eastern Spain. It has some of the best weather in Europe and is called the “winterless” city. Even in January the temperatures hover around 65° F (around 18° C).

There are so many things to do in Cartegena from historic Roman and Carthaginian sites, to amazing tapas and Spanish cuisine. There are marble streets, incredible architecture, great museums. And in the historic port, you can find billionaire yachts and super cruisers. There are several remarkable Roman ruins and archaeological sites, including El Molinete, the Morería Baja colonnade, and the Byzantine Wall.

The Augusteum preserves the remains of the ancient forum, its stunning marble floors still survive. Meanwhile, the Decumanus can be explored in the Roman Forum quarter, where visitors can wander through the various chambers of the city’s historic Roman baths.

Another highlight is Casa Fortuna, a first-century B.C. residence that once belonged to a wealthy family. This well-preserved home offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life during the Roman Empire.

Families should visit the ARQVA maritime archaeology museum, which kids love as there are interactive displays and some incredible shipwreck finds. Everyone will enjoy riding the panoramic lift to Castillo de la Concepción for breathtaking city views. The views of the Roman Theatre from here are amazing.

There’s lots of walking to be done in Cartegena so pack comfortable shoes and bring along a sweater for those cooler evenings and enjoy this unusual Spanish City.

Malaga, Spain

Malaga is one of the best winter sun destinations in Europe. If you visit the city in December, you will like its festive atmosphere while enjoying the sunshine. The average high temperature in December is 17° C, and the low is 8 ° C. The weather is pleasantly warm and mild during the day, but the temperature tends to decrease significantly at night. This is why it is very important to pack a combination of clothes. Layering is key to dressing in Malaga in December.

If you love all things Christmas, there are quite a few traditional things you want to see and experience as a traveller. For example, seeing a nativity scene, checking the markets at the port and seeing the Christmas light show in Calle Larios. Additionally, it’s a good time to sightsee. Visit the Alcazaba complex and Gibralfaro Castle, the botanical garden, and the museums.

Consider Malaga in Spain amongst Europe winter sun destinations.

Families travelling with children will enjoy the kid-friendly atmosphere and activities. Going to museums like the Music Museum is always a good option. But even art galleries tend to have workshops cater to children and teens. Another fun activity for all ages is to visit the Cliché Gallery, an interactive gallery perfect for taking photos.

While there are many activities to do in Malaga, you also have the option of going on day trips to Caminito del ReyMarbella or Gibraltar. The latter is the most popular among families. Kids love visiting the Top of the Rock and seeing the macaques.

Mallorca, Spain

Most of Europe bundles up in coats and jackets in winter. But Mallorca, Spain offers a mild and peaceful escape with daytime temperatures around 15–18°C. Visiting in the winter means skipping those summer crowds, making it the perfect getaway for those looking for a slower pace of travel.

There are so many incredible things to do in Mallorca no matter the season. Start in Palma de Mallorca, a vibrant foodie town where you can explore the Gothic cathedral, charming old town, and bustling local markets. For nature lovers, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains offer incredible winter hiking with sea views and crisp, cool air, an easier and more pleasant experience than summertime.

Quiet villages like Deià, Soller and Valldemossa are full of Mediterranean charm and cozy cafés, and during the winter, they lack the groups of tourists, too.

The best part? During the winter, the weather remains nice and warm with plenty of sunshine. Bring layers—a light jacket, sweaters, and comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses, either! With affordable prices, beautiful weather and welcoming locals, Mallorca offers a unique winter getaway.
