Best European cities for NYE fireworks displays & Christmas cheer
Barcelona, Spain
Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Barcelona is a fabulous way to welcome in the new year with a bang! The whole city celebrates, and whether you choose to head to the beach or a rooftop terrace for fireworks, go to the main celebration at Plaça d’Espanya or go for dinner and dancing, you’ll have a great time in Barcelona.
The official New Year’s Celebration is held on Avinguda Maria Cristina, and includes a light and music performance and a huge fireworks display just before midnight. It is free to attend but it gets extremely busy. So once it’s over you’ll be battling with crowds to reach the metro! Alternatively, book a City View or Square View room at the Catalonia Barcelona Plaza to watch the fireworks from the comfort of your bedroom or the roof terrace.

Plaça Catalunya is another popular place on New Year’s Eve, where locals get together to drink cava. And eat their lucky grapes (one at each chime of midnight) then throw their empty bottles into the centre of the square.
The weather is relatively mild as Barcelona winter temperatures average 12-14°C during the day, then drop to around 6°C at night. But you’ll still need a jacket and warm layers – especially if you plan to be outdoors for the celebrations. Celebrating New Year Eve as part of your Barcelona itinerary is different from visiting its world famous attractions at any other time.

Collioure, France
The small town of Collioure, France comes alive each year during the holiday season. It is one of the best places for new years in Europe. Locals and visitors set up tables and picnic blankets along the beach to enjoy tasty local delicacies from the pop-up vendors including oysters and white or sparkling wine from the region. Restaurants with outside patios are also available for those wanting a more formal or traditional dinner.
After everyone has assembled, the evening always begins with a toast from the Mayor in the main square with well wishes for all. In the same area, on a raised stage, a live band will play music and entertain the crowd. It is festive and lively with dancing in the streets and everyone enjoying the event.

Close to midnight, the city hosts a fabulous fireworks display, launched from the harbour beside the church, that can be seen from everywhere in the town. The beach is full of revellers as they celebrate and welcome in the new year. It is absolutely the best spot to enjoy New Year’s Eve in France.
Protected at the foot of the Pyrenees, and located on the sea, the weather remains mild and allows for a wonderful outdoor celebration.

Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is amongst the best European city for celebrating New Year. It offers a mix of festivities, great food, and mild weather. As the clock strikes midnight, the city’s iconic Praça do Comércio becomes the focal point. Where thousands gather to watch the biggest fireworks display in Portugal. The celebrations stretch out along the river and to other parts of the city too. There is live music and street parties in neighbourhoods like Alfama, Bairro Alto, as well as many of the miradouros and viewpoints the city offers!

It’s not just the fireworks and celebrations, in the days leading up to New Year. Lisbon’s Christmas markets, and Winter Wonderland festival add to the buzzing atmosphere. Lisbon’s array of restaurants and hotels host dinners and parties to welcome in the New Year. These festive events are great places to try local food and Portuguese delicacies, like Bacalhau, and seafood dishes. Dining at a rooftop terrace, or attending a rooftop party offers an exclusive experience while giving you great views of the many firework events held across the city. However, you’ll need to book early, as once New Years Eve arrives, many of these events have sold out!
Lisbon is one of the best destinations in Europe to celebrate New Years Eve, offering both traditional celebrations and its own unique take on the holiday period. Lisbon’s winter climate is pleasantly mild, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C. This is ideal for enjoying all of the outdoor festivities, Christmas markets, and events without the chill of harsher European winters. Post NYE celebrations, you can even consider one of the day trips from Lisbon.

London, UK
London is one of the best European city for New Year. Why, you ask? Because this city knows how to celebrate in style! All through December, London is brimming with festive spirit, offering a wide range of activities and events (from Christmas markets to ice skating) that make it a magical place to visit.
And December 31st is no exception! From exciting parties to family-friendly fun in Trafalgar Square or Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, there is something for everyone. And, let’s not forget the world-famous New Year’s Eve fireworks lighting up the sky over the iconic London Eye. There is nothing quite as spectacular as the light shows against historic landmarks, all set to the timeless chimes of Big Ben!

Here’s a travel tip: Instead of buying tickets and squeezing into crowded areas, grab some bubbly, round up your friends, pack a picnic, and head to Primrose Hill. It’s open late for the festivities, offers amazing views of the fireworks, and best of all – it’s free! It is one of the best things to do in London with kids. Sure, the weather can be a bit chilly, with temperatures ranging 2-8°C, but it’s nothing a couple of layers can’t handle!

Paris, France
Paris is a top choice for celebrating New Year’s Eve in Europe, drawing visitors to the City of Light each year. The highlight of the evening is the dazzling fireworks display over the Arc de Triomphe, visible from the iconic Champs-Élysées or from Concorde. For a more comfortable experience, book a hotel nearby, allowing you to step out just in time for the show (and significantly shortening your journey home at the end of the night).
Paris transforms into a winter wonderland each December, with festive decorations and vibrant holiday markets. Make sure to visit the Christmas Market in the Tuileries Garden. Then, cross the street and visit Angelina Paris, a cafe where you can enjoy a warm cup of French hot chocolate. It’s the perfect way to savor the season.

During your visit, try some classic French fare. Many restaurants offer special New Year’s Eve menus featuring French staples like oysters and truffles. Reservations are essential and should be made well in advance.
To fully enjoy the evening, dress warmly and stylishly; the weather is typically chilly and may be rainy. Remember to be mindful of your belongings on public transit, where pickpocketing is common.

Porto, Portugal
Porto is an incredible European city for New Year. You can see some of the best fireworks displays in the country. The Portuguese city is famous for its hills and many viewpoints. The viewpoint at Jardim do Morro is much loved for the river Douro views, but the nearby Ponte Luís I is incredible, too. The famous bridge has become a true landmark in Porto, and the fireworks are spectacular at midnight. The views from Cais de Gaia at Vila Nova de Gaia are just wow!

You’ll also have a great view from the docks in the Ribeira area in Porto. There are also many restaurants and bars around the waterfront. Perfect to celebrate the New Year! When the fireworks start at midnight on top of the Dom Luís I Bridge, you’ll have one of the best views in the house. You can even book a boat tour on New Year’s Eve to watch the fireworks displays from the river. Afterwards, you can join one of many parties in the city to start the new year.
The weather in December can be pretty chilly on a windy day. There might also be a chance of rain, as Porto is a rainy city in winter, unfortunately. Post NYE celebrations, you can consider visiting Lisbon for its main attractions.

Prague, Warsaw
Prague is one of the best European New Year destinations, offering a blend of fairy-tale architecture, clubs and vibrant festivities. Throughout December, the city’s historic streets, illuminated by fairytale lights, create an enchanting atmosphere perfect for celebrating.
Start your evening at Prague’s iconic Old Town Square, where the Christmas market and live music set the tone for your evening. As midnight nears, head to Riegrovy Sady with the locals for sweeping views of fireworks, or, if you’re looking for an upscale celebration, opt for a river cruise with dinner and drinks.

Late December in Prague can be quite chilly, with temperatures ranging from -3°C to 2°C (27°F-36°F), so pack warm clothing and wind breakers to cut through the icy breeze. Public transport is efficient and affordable, but walking lets you fully appreciate the city’s charm on foot (and snap lots of beautiful photos!).
Remember to book accommodations and event tickets early, as Prague is a popular New Year’s destination. If you happen to extend your trip a couple days, you’ll get the chance to explore some of Prague’s historical sights as well.

Venice, Italy
Venice is one of Europe’s top destinations to celebrate the New Year, offering an unforgettable blend of historical charm, romance, and grandeur.
Start your evening with a delicious meal at a well-chosen restaurant—just be sure to book ahead, as popular spots fill up quickly. Dinner is usually served between 8-9pm. Mouthwatering food is a great way to start the festivities! The heart of the celebration is at St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco), the ideal location to witness Venice’s stunning New Year’s Eve fireworks. The square buzzes with the LOVE festival and live music throughout the night, building excitement until the clock strikes midnight.

As the fireworks light up the sky, St. Mark’s Basilica provides a stunning backdrop, with the display reflecting off the tranquil waters of the Venetian lagoon. The magic of the moment is enhanced by the joyful shouts of “Buon Anno” echoing across the city. And the festivities continue with plenty of wine.
Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Venice is more than just a tradition. It’s an extraordinary way to welcome the New Year, leaving you with unforgettable memories. While late December in Venice brings a chilly atmosphere, with temperatures ranging from 3°C to 8°C (37°F to 46°F), it’s the joyous environment throughout the city that makes New Year’s truly special. Post NYE celebrations, you can consider exploring the nearby islands as an addition to your Venice itinerary.

Zagreb, Croatia
Why you should pick up Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, to spend New Year’s eve there? This city has been voted 3 times in a row (2016-2018) as the best Christmas market in Europe. Here you can visit the Christmas market between the end of November and the beginning of January. It surpassed London, Paris, and other bigger cities around Europe.
It is easy to explore Zagreb in a day. Your visit can start with the funicular to the older Upper town, visiting Lotršćak tower with cannon firing at noon, Marko’s square with parliament seat, and Stone Gate. In Lower Town, you will find Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe, a U-shaped system of city squares with parks, statues, fountains, and neoclassical 18th-century buildings.

The core Christmas market is here with lights, concerts, a beautiful ice rink, a gigantic Christmas tree, stands with local and tasty food, mulled wine and gingerbread, or original and handmade gifts.
At Zagreb Cathedral, you can adore a live nativity scene. The main venue for concerts is Ban Jelačić Square and a popular spot to wait for the new year and fireworks. Zagreb has different influences from Slavic and German. Mediterranean and Turkish. This is visible in its local cuisine. Typical dinner would be “Stuffed turkey with mlinci” and lunch for the next morning’s hangover “Sarma with mashed potatoes”. As for drinks, at this time mead and mulled wine are popular.

European cities great for NYE partying
Budapest, Hungary
One of Europe’s best New Year destinations is Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It is one of Europe’s primary party destinations at any time of year. And is most notable for its ruin bars which are run-down abandoned spaces, converted into popular drinking spots. However on New Year’s Eve it takes things to the next level with fireworks displays, street parties and special NYE river cruises.
Fireworks displays generally take place along the River Danube. If you take a river cruise then you can enjoy dinner and drinks and combine it with some sightseeing. Many of Budapest’s top sights are by the river, including the Hungarian parliament building.

My best tip would be to book accommodation several months in advance. It goes up in price the closer you get to NYE, and most of the good places would’ve gone by then anyway. Budapest is absolutely crowded for New Year, which means there’s a lot of demand for good places to stay.
One downside of New Year in Budapest is that it comes in the middle of winter, which means it’s very cold. Pack gloves, a scarf and a hat as well as a warm jacket. Warmly clad, visiting Budapest for the New Year is highly recommended.
By Alex of Adventure to Every Country
Edinburgh, Scotland
No one parties quite like the Scots, and, as New Year Celebrations go, they don’t get much bigger than Hogmanay in Edinburgh. Visitors from across the globe flock to Scotland’s Capital City to experience this unique, three-day event that includes torchlit processions, a giant street party, concerts, and fireworks.
On New Year’s Eve, over 40,000 people gather in the streets below Edinburgh Castle, where pop-up bars, food trucks, and street performers keep the festive spirit flowing. A spectacular fireworks display marks the beginning of the New Year as the crowd holds hands and sings ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

And it doesn’t end there! New Year’s Day sees hardy souls take a dip in the freezing waters of the River Forth, dressed in some seriously wacky outfits.
Book your tickets for the Street Party in advance and leave your car at home! Many of the roads are closed off, and public transport is the easiest way to get into the city. The weather tends to be cold rather than wet but check the forecast in advance and go prepared.

Madrid, Spain
Madrid, the Spanish capital, is a lively, vibrant place that is worth visiting anytime of the year. But it is especially energetic during the festive period. This is when there are plenty of Christmas lights and decorations lighting up the city into the New Year, making it a magical place of wonderment.
What To Do On New Year’s Eve In Madrid? Party, of course! Madrid is renowned for being one of Europe’s best party capitals and that’s very much the case on New Year’s Eve. There are countless nightclubs where you can celebrate in popular neighbourhoods such as Chueca, Malasaña, La Latina, and Lavapiés. My recommendation is to visit Kapital club – a huge nightclub featuring seven aesthetically different floors where you can dance the night away.

If you’re looking for other things to do in Madrid over the New Year period, you can see some art at Madrid’s world famous Golden Triangle of art museums. Or relax and go for a stroll in the sprawling and beautiful El Retiro Park. Do enjoy some tapas and other Spanish cuisine at San Miguel food market.
Madrid enjoys mild temperatures throughout the year. During the New Year period, the city typically enjoys temperatures around an average of 7°C (44.6 °F).

Munich, Germany
Well known for Oktoberfest, Munich is also a great New Year destination in Europe. Called Silvester in Germany, New Year’s Eve in Munich means drinking, dancing, and lots of fireworks. It’s a fun party for all ages!
The Silvester Party in Munich is held at the fairgrounds at Tollwood, an easy walk from the city center. Partake in a feast for the senses! New Year’s in Munich means art installations, traditional food, authentic beer, and live music. Silvester features five stages with bands and DJs, culminating in fireworks and the traditional midnight waltz.

Pack your woolies and dress warmly for New Year’s Eve in Munich. Weather varies, but snow is possible at this time of year. A hat, gloves, and warm jacket will keep you cozy in the cold. If you want to get into the German spirit, you can buy or rent traditional Bavarian clothing, like leiderhosen or dirndl. Another way to keep warm is to try the local favorite Gluhwein, a hot mulled wine, sold by many outdoor vendors across Munich. As the Germans say, Frohes neues Jahr!

Vienna, Austria
Vienna is one of the best European city for New Year! The fun starts at around 2 pm, when the Silvesterpfad, or New Year’s Trail, begins along the pedestrian streets of the city center. You’ll find sparkling lights, live music, lots of delicious snacks, warm drinks, and dancing! We loved celebrating the New Year in Vienna, while the music goes until 2 am or later, the earlier start time means that families of all ages can enjoy the celebrations.
There are various stages set up along the route, with different styles of live music ranging from orchestras, to pop. You can wander between them, under the festive lights of the Graben, with a glass of warm Gluhwein (spiced wine) in hand. While the celebrations attract thousands of people, they are spaced out enough that we never felt crowded.

During the evening, the Vienna Philharmonic performs a New Year’s Eve Concert. The tickets for this are notoriously difficult to get and involve a lottery system. This concert is always broadcast in front of City Hall (Rathaus) and in front of the Vienna State Opera. At the stroke of midnight, the bells of St. Stephens Cathedral ring, followed by a broadcast of the Blue Danube Waltz.
If you’re looking for a fancier way to celebrate, consider the New Year’s Eve Ball at the Hofburg which officially opens the Ball Season in Vienna. Make sure to dress warmly, as Vienna in winter is often below freezing. It is traditional to exchange pigs as a symbol of good luck for the new year, you’ll see small marzipan pigs and small plastic pigs for sale at the New Year’s markets.

Best New Year European destinations for cultural events & unique traditions
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is one of the best European cities for NYE. This is because there is a lot going on during new years. Leidseplein, Dam square and all the canal paths are very popular during this time of the year.
There is a Light Festival with loads of light displays that are set up across the city. Many people choose to see these via a boat tour but if it’s raining and wet I would say skip it because you can’t see much. You can also walk around and catch sight of the exhibits which is also pretty cool.

If you love ice skating, there is a skating rink that is set up every year. The kids especially have so much fun here. The whole atmosphere is very cheerful and enjoyable. When the cold gets too much to handle, I would advise heading into the museums where you can remain warm and toasty while enjoying the world class art. Even if you are visiting Amsterdam with kids, there are plenty of museums for them to enjoy.
If you are looking for hotels to stay in Amsterdam, staying central is always a good option. That way you can easily walk everywhere. Generally speaking the city is cold and wet at this time of the year. If you are lucky you may even have a thin blanket of snow. But New Year isn’t always white.

Belgrade, Serbia
Of all the things to do in Belgrade, spending New Year’s Eve in the city will be one of my top. Belgrade is a great city to visit any time of the year because it is lively. No matter what the day of the week is, you will find parties, music, something to do regardless of what you like to do. And definitely, celebrating the arrival of a New Year is that celebration spirit taken to a next level.

During New Year’s Eve, locals prepare to celebrate with families or friends and prepare delicious dishes. During the night, they go out to see the fireworks at the Belgrade Waterfront or to the Saint Sava Temple. In different areas of the city, there are stages with music events and celebrations. The weather, although it is cold, normally turns warm due to how nice and welcoming Serbians are normally and because fireworks and the heat of the moment take place.
If you are spending New Year’s in Belgrade, I recommend staying at any hotel in the center. My top choice would be Hotel Majestic right in the city center, since it combines history with luxury and comfort. If you haven’t considered it, add Belgrade to one of the European cities to spend New Year’s Eve at!
By Brenda of Traveleira
Gdańsk, Poland
Gdańsk in Poland is one of the best places for New Years in Europe. Fans of classical music should head to the Baltic Opera. It prepares a New Year’s Eve concert, where you’ll hear beautiful, timeless pieces from famous operas and operettas. If you prefer film music, the concert organized by the Baltic Philharmonic will be a perfect choice.
Fans of more extreme experiences won’t be disappointed with the offer from AmberSky – a gondola ride on the Gdańsk Ferris wheel. The ride starts just before midnight, offering an opportunity to view the city and the fireworks from above. An ideal option for those who seek space and nature is the beautiful beaches of the Sobieszewo Island. The twinkling lights of ships anchored offshore and the starry sky replace the fireworks show at midnight.

A less obvious way to spend New Year’s Eve is winter swimming. Gdańsk has a decades-old tradition of welcoming the New Year among the sea waves. Every year, winter swimming enthusiasts gather on the beach in Jelitkowo to dip in the cold waters of the Baltic Sea.
Expect chilly temperatures and possible snowfall in Gdańsk during winter months. Pack plenty of warm layers, windproof outerwear, and sturdy shoes to keep you comfortable as you explore this beautiful city in the colder season.
By Joanna of Overhere
Isle of Skye, Scotland
Located on the northwest coast of mainland Scotland, Isle of Skye, is amongst the best European new year destinations. It is especially great for those who do not mind unpredictable weather, but can appreciate beautiful scenery in any kind of conditions.
When it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve, there are many possibilities: if you love adventure why not to take an evening walk to Old Man of Storr. This is recommended only to experienced walkers, who have all required equipment, including good head torch. Those looking to blend with locals with good, live music could opt out for a community ceilidh in Portree, or visit a more secluded place to chase northern lights.

During the day, Skye has many beautiful walks to be discovered, and many points of interest helping you to learn all about the life on this beautiful island. Skye in winter can be very magical with its dark skies, covered by frost or snow but it can also be moody with rain and wind. Hence everyone planning their trip there in December should be prepared for all those quirks of climate.
By Ela of Stunning Outdoors
Lucca, Italy
Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, the historic city of Lucca is amongst the best European cities for NYE, blending rich Italian culture with vibrant festivities. Even better, in Lucca they celebrate New Years twice! The first celebration is at midnight like the rest of the world. And the second one is 18 minutes and one second after. The custom comes from the calculated transit of the sun on the Torre delle Ore sundial.
There are special NY concerts, plays, operas and multi-course dinners at some of the best restaurants in Lucca. But the locals will be celebrating in the piazzas. In fact, almost every piazza in the city will be decorated with holiday lights.

In the main square at the Cathedral, Piazza San Martino, from 10pm until the wee hours of the morning, there will be live entertainment with lots of music and fireworks. Another party will be happening in the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro with more music and festivities. The best part is that anyone can wander, dance and sing in the square—it’s all free.

Paphos, Cyprus
Paphos, a lovely coastal city in Cyprus, can be considered among the perfect new year destinations in Europe. It is the place for those interested in low-key celebrations where you can escape the routine and soak in the warm sun.
Winter is Paphos’s off-season, meaning you can explore the city with fewer crowds and waiting lines. Most of the hotels, shops, and attractions stay open, ensuring you can visit museums, markets, malls, and even the famous Paphos Castle. However, these sites may remain closed on public holidays, so check the official sites before planning your itinerary. Try traditional Cyprus food to pamper your taste buds with complex flavours.

Paphos Christmas Market is the perfect place to spend an evening shopping for souvenirs and enjoying the bustling vibes of the city. Stay around the city centre, as many of the bars and cafes are located here and organise New Year celebrations on their premises.
Paphos in December comes with rain and sun, as this is the wettest month with more than 10 days of rain. But do not let that stop you from visiting Paphos in December for New Year’s. The temperature stays between 10–19°C, and even though the sea is too cold for a dip, you can still enjoy a sunny day on the beach.

Wow. Loved this. Some suggestions I have never thought of for the holidays.
I also wouldn’t have thought of Collioure or Gdansk myself, so much to explore.
New Year Scenes in Europe has always fascinated me. I have heard a lot about Vienna, particularly from my friends who moved there.
I hope to be in London or Paris on NY Eve someday. Fascinating, indeed.
