The Albanian Riviera is one of the best cheap places to visit in Europe in October. This area of the world is new on the tourist scene, but it’s gained the nickname the Maldives of Europe. Right now, it’s incredibly cost-effective to visit Albania, with accommodation and food being unbelievably cheap compared to more popular destinations.

Weather: In the peak summer months, the region can hit incredibly high temperatures, making it a little unbearable. But in October, the temperatures range from 14°C – 23°C, makig it one of the warm places in Europe in October. You could spend all day on the beach without having to hide from the heat and spend time exploring without getting ridiculously sweaty. 

Things to see and do: This coastline has some of the most picturesque scenery you’ll ever encounter. You’ll be awestruck by mountains, rivers, refreshing springs, crystal clear oceans, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Gjiorokaster and Butrint National Archaeological Park. The Albanian Riviera is vast, with plenty of towns and sites to explore, so it’s recommended to rent a car in Albania, particularly as public transport is few and far between, and taxi costs will quickly add up.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

Dalmatian Coast the most famous (and touristed) stretch is its southernmost region of Croatia. October offers you great value while visiting the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia with reduced crowds and enjoyable weather. This coast boasts of beautiful scenery, clear waters, and historic cities such as Split and Dubrovnik.

Weather: Even as summer fades, the sea is still refreshingly cool in October, with water temperature on the Adriatic ranging from 20 to 23 °C. It is not optimal swimming weather though.

Things to see and do: Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful old towns I have visited on my two-week trip to Croatia. And this is true even if you are not a Game of Thrones fan like me! Walking the old town walls of Dubrovnik, taking in the stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, riding the cable car up the Srd hill, so many memories from this town. There are plenty of day trips you can take from Dubrovnik to nearby Croatian islands. The pleasant weather in October would be perfect to climb the walls of Ston, Croatia.

Split is the largest city on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. Diocletian’s Palace is the oldest continuously-inhabited Roman palace in the world. Within Diocletian’s Palace, you’ll find The Cathedral of Saint Domnius, one of the oldest cathedrals in the world. Many visitors use it as a base to explore nearby areas like Zadar, Trogir, and also do day trips to nearby Croatian islands like Brac, Hvar. It is also easy to plan a day trip to the famous Plitvice Lakes national park from here.

Paphos, Cyprus

If you are still clinging onto the European summer, then Paphos in Cyprus is an ideal October getaway. Sunny days and warm temperatures make Paphos a great destination to spend time outdoors. The combination of ancient relics, pristine beaches, and the beautiful Old Town makes the small town in southern Cyprus a Mediterranean hack, with cheap flights and fewer crowds in the autumn. 

Weather: The average temperatures in Paphos in October is about 26°C in the daytime. The nighttime temperatures are around 16°C offering nice evenings, which are best spent enjoying the beautiful restaurants down by the harbour.

Things to see and do: A fun activity in Paphos for the family in October is to explore the Tombs of the Kings on the coastline. More manageable temperatures means that the famous archaeological site can be explored more comfortably. 

If stepping into Cyprus’ ancient past is on your agenda during your visit, you should head to Nea Paphos Archaeological Park to admire the original mosaics, Roman theatre, and Paphos lighthouse. Athens, Greece

The historic capital of Greece draws visitors from far and wide to explore its ancient ruins. While it offers many must-see sights, during peak travel season, the city faces massive issues with over-tourism, coupled with intense heat, making the experience pretty miserable. A visit to Athens in the fall is a much more enjoyable experience. The weather is comfortable and crowds smaller. And the autumn months bring a picture-perfect charm to the city as the foliage adds a warm, golden hue to the imposing ruins and parks.

Weather: The daytime average temperature is around 23°C, which drops to about 15°C in the nights. It makes Athens as one of the warm places in Europe in October.

Things to see and do: No Athens itinerary is complete without visiting the iconic Parthenon at the Acropolis site. To understand its significance, it’s best to take a guided tour. But book it ahead of time, even in the offseason, tours can sell out. In addition to the Acropolis, also pencil in stops to the Ancient Agora, National Archaeological Museum, and enjoy the view from Mount Lycabettus.

Cooler temperatures make it ideal for day trips to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, Delphi, or the nearby islands. Peloponnese, Greece

While many of the Greek islands may close down for the off-season, there are still plenty of exciting destinations to visit along the Greek mainland. In fact, October is the best time of the year to plan a road trip across the Peloponnese. You can even extend this to a full itinerary for Greece mainland.

Weather: The scorching heat has been replaced with cool, comfortable climates. Daytime in October usually feels mild to warm, with temperatures rising up to 23°C.

Things to see and do: Coming from Athens, you enter the Peloponnese by crossing the Isthmus of Corinth. From here, you can tour the ancient cities of Corinth, Mycenae, Epidavros, and Nafplio before following the coast south to the medieval fortress town of Monemvasia.

Continuing your journey along the shoreline, you will pass through the historic cities of Gythio, Kalamata, Messene, and the Venetian fortress of Methoni along the Peloponnese’s southwestern tip.

Then, following the road north, you will come to the striking Voidokilia Bay, home to beautiful castles and the enigmatic Cave of Nestor. Santorini makes a great place to visit in October. As the summer crowds start to die out and the temperatures become cooler, Santorini goes back to that idyllic island that people used to rave about, before it was invaded by tourists. Hotel rates drop significantly from summer prices, and you might snag deals on activities and car rentals. Despite being off-peak, most attractions remain open throughout October, though it’s wise to check schedules.

Weather: The weather in October is just right, warm enough for t-shirts during the day, but cool enough for comfortable exploration. With average temperatures around 20°C (68°F), you can still enjoy the beach without the scorching summer heat. The sea remains warm for swimming, a perfect 22°C (72°F).

Things to see and do: October visitors enjoy Santorini’s beauty without the crush of peak-season tourists. You’ll have more breathing room at popular spots in your Santorini itinerary. Like Oia’s sunset viewpoint and the narrow streets of Fira. Restaurants and cafes are less crowded, it is great to sample the best food in Santorini. 

October is also harvest season in Santorini and many wineries offer special tours and tastings. The island’s unique volcanic soil produces distinctive wines worth sampling. Amalfi Coast, Italy

Despite being known as a summer destination, October is a lovely time to visit Amalfi Coast! With warm temperatures that linger into October and smaller crowds, it really is an amazing time to visit.

Weather: The average temperature in October is 72 °F (23 °C), meaning you’ll still enjoy sunshine and warm days, especially in early October. It is one of the one of the warm places in Europe in October. Still completely warm enough to enjoy the beach or a boat ride but not hot enough to make you sweat through all your clothes.

Things to see and do: The crowds also start to thin out here, making it a more relaxing experience compared to summer, with excellent weather for sunbathing, hiking, and enjoying time on the water. Plus, prices do drop in October so you’ll also be saving some money on this trip! 

Throughout the month of October, everything stays open in the larger towns on the Amalfi Coast, including the towns of Amalfi, Sorrento, and Positano, which should be on everyone’s Amalfi Coast itinerary. You can plan a day trip to Capri island. The beaches in smaller towns like Atrani will be closed, so plan where to stay accordingly! As someone who has visited the Amalfi Coast in both July and October, I can, without a doubt, say October is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast.

Bologna, Italy is one of the best European cities to visit in October. With its blend of history, delicious food, and comfortable weather, it’s a destination that’s hard to beat. Fall is the perfect time to explore Bologna because the summer crowds have thinned out, making it easier to enjoy all the city has to offer. 

Weather: In October, you can expect mild temperatures, usually ranging from 12°C (54°F) to 19°C (66°F) – ideal for sightseeing and outdoor fun. Be sure to pack layers to stay comfortable with the changing weather.

Things to see and do: There are so many things to do in Bologna for free, which helps with your travel budget so you can splurge on the amazing food! Marvel at the historic Two Towers, and visit the impressive Basilica di San Petronio. Wander through the medieval streets of the Quadrilatero district to find hidden gems, like Little Venice and ancient markets. You can also consider a guided walking tour through the streets of Bologna.

This is perfect for you to explore the 5 picturesque villages perched along Italy’s rugged coastline.

Weather: The weather in October is generally pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 59°F to 72°F. At the beginning of the month especially, the sea will still be warm enough to swim in, without having to deal with the oppressive summer heat. You’ll want to bring comfortable walking shoes for the trails, and be prepared for occasional rain by packing a light waterproof jacket.

Things to see and do: In Cinque Terre, you can hike the scenic trails that connect the villages and enjoy the stunning coastal views. This is also much more pleasant to do in mild temperatures than in the summer heat. You can also explore the charming streets lined with colorful houses in each village. Family-friendly activities include visiting the local beaches, taking boat trips for panoramic views, and exploring the Aquarium of Genoa, which is a short train ride away.

For travel tips, consider staying in one village and getting a rail pass to use the train and explore the others. October means less crowds but is still a popular time to visit so you’ll definitely want to book your accommodations in advance.

With the summer crowds dissipating, the city transforms into a serene haven, allowing visitors to fully appreciate its rich history and culture. Things to see and do: Families visiting Rome must plan a visit to the Colosseum, where kids can marvel at the historic Roman amphitheatre. I recommend signing up for a Priority Access tour. Don’t forget to walk through the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill as you learn about the ancient Roman civilization.  

A must on any Rome itinerary is also a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. You can book your entry tickets online. Kotor, Montenegro

Lisbon is amongst the best European cities to visit in October. If you’re someone who prefers a more temperate climate, Lisbon in Portugal is the perfect place to visit this month.

Weather: The weather in Portugal is relatively warm all year round- personally, I find it much too hot in summer, and the 15-23°C average temperatures of October is just perfect. You’re also lucky that it’s right before the wettest time of the year- November and December.

Things to see and do: A fun activity that kids would enjoy is taking the tram around the city. You can easily take the 28E tram, which is packed in summer, but not so in October. The top attractions like Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, castle of Saint Jorge, have fewer crowds. Take the Santa Justa lift for panoramic views of the city. And a walking tour to explore its charming neighbourhoods.

Lisbon is also very close to many beautiful beaches, such as the ones at Cascais, which are a short direct train ride away and an easy day trip from Lisbon. The most popular day trip is to Sintra that includes a visit to the Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira.

There is a lot more to do in Lisbon, but one of my favourite things to do is eat. You can get very high-quality seafood at very reasonable prices in the city. One of their must-try dishes is Octopus and you also get very good international cuisine. I had some of the best teriyaki meatballs there!

Porto, Portugal

If you’re searching for a vacation spot to visit in October that’s not too crowded, has a wide variety of things to do, and has a temperate climate, then consider Porto. 

Weather: October in Porto still sports t-shirt weather, with an average daily high of 20 °C (68 F). While it won’t be cold, autumn in Portugal can be unpredictably rainy. Pack layers and an umbrella, no matter what the forecast may be.

Things to see and do: The first thing on the itinerary should be a Port wine tasting in the Douro Valley. Real Port wine can only come from the Douro Valley, just a short boat ride from Porto. Or, if you’d rather stay in the city, take a tour of one of the Port storehouses along the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront. Or discover the historical center of Porto via an e-bike tour.

Avid readers can browse the Lello Bookstore, a stunning historic bookshop – with a wizardry connection! J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, lived in Porto in the ’90s. After you finish book shopping, climb to the top of the Clérgios Tower to see Porto from the city’s highest point – or watch the light show from the church below.

Barcelona, Spain

Without a doubt, there’s no better time for your Barcelona travel itinerary than October. While summertime is Barcelona’s most popular time to visit, an estimated 3 million tourists show up between June and August. However, when the city’s fall season hits, that number drops significantly! That means emptier streets, quieter attractions, and more space at the city’s best tapas bars. 

Weather: The weather in October is one of my favourite times in the city, particularly if you have young kids. The average high for this time of the year is 23°C. The average overnight low will see temperatures fall to 17°C. It can get a little rainy, and the temperature drops when the sun sets, so bring a light jacket for those chilly evenings. 

Things to see and do: Visit Sagrada Familia with a bit more space, have an around-the-city photoshoot without the crowds, walk Passeig de Gràcia without bumping shoulders, and hop on a train to a coastal town with an empty beach. You cannot leave Barcelona without enjoying tapas and local wine here. Consider this Catalan food and drink tour with a local guide of the Old City of Barcelona. 

Generally, the city is quite small, so traffic can be a hassle any time of year. That said, I’d recommend sticking to walking or taking public transportation, especially if you’re traveling with your family. Both are safe and affordable.

Malaga, Spain

Malaga is one of the best cities to visit in Europe in October if you want fewer crowds and a pleasant temperature for sightseeing and hiking. Many travellers come to the city during the summer for its beaches and numerous events, but visiting Malaga in October is much cheaper and offers a more laid-back atmosphere.

Things to see and do: If you plan to stay in the city, you can’t miss exploring its historic centre. Here you will find important buildings such as Malaga Cathedral, Alcazaba de Malaga, the Roman Theatre, and Gibralfaro Castle. You can do-it-yourself or take a guided walking tour.

Malaga also has many museums catering to all ages and interests. Whether you love art, fashion, or cars, there is a museum in Malaga. If you’re thinking about visiting an European city in October, Seville is a fantastic choice! Autumn is one of the best times to explore this beautiful Spanish city.

Things to see and do: If you’re traveling to Valencia with kids, the City of Arts and Sciences is a must. Another top attraction for families is the Bioparc, a zoo that is home to nearly a thousand animals from 150 African species.

To get a feel for the local culture, spend some time in the historic old town. Wander through the narrow streets, visit the Valencia Cathedral, and climb the Miguelete Tower. For lunch, stop at the Central Market to sample delicious Spanish food. Or explore Valencia’s Old Town with a passionate guide, then enjoy an evening of wine and tapas.
 
If possible, plan your trip to Valencia around October 9th to experience the Day of the Valencian Community. The celebrations feature colorful Moros y Cristianos parades, fireworks, and lively markets. October 9th also coincides with St. Dionysius’ Day, Valencia’s equivalent of Valentine’s Day.

Cappadocia, Turkey

If adventure and rugged landscapes excite you, don’t miss out on Cappadocia as one of the best European destinations in October. October offers pleasant daytime temperatures, cool evenings, and low rainfall in Cappadocia. So add it to your Turkey itinerary.

During the daytime, temperatures are quite pleasant at 22°C (69°F). As the sun sets and evening approaches, temperatures drop noticeably to around 6°C (41°F). So bring layers and warm clothing to stay comfortable, especially during the cooler evenings. 

Things to see and do: There are so many things to do in Cappadocia and enjoy the unusual landscape of this region. The unusual landscape of Cappadocia is home to many interesting valleys. You can hike in many of these. Pigeon Valley is home to thousands of pigeon homes carved into the rock faces. Love Valley is renowned for the famous phallic rock structures. Rose and Red Valley has the perfect panoramic viewpoint for sunset. Devrent or ‘Imagination’ valley with its interesting rock formations is a must.

One of the popular activities in Cappadocia is to take a hot air balloon ride to enjoy the fantastical landscape. My hot air balloon experience here was memorable. Goreme is the famous open air museum in Cappadocia and a must on any Cappadocia itinerary.  It has well-preserved rock-cut churches with famed frescoes and monasteries.

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is an incredible city and October is, hands down, the best time to visit this captivating place. 

Weather: In October, the weather in Istanbul is lovely. You can expect daytime highs to be around 20°C  and nighttime lows around 13°C, perfect for exploring the many lovely areas around the city. 

Things to see and do: October is also shoulder season, so the summer crowds are gone. This means you can sightsee with ease. And considering that Istanbul is over 2500 years old, there are many fascinating landmarks in Istanbul to see!

The historic district of Sultanahmet houses the city’s most famous attractions such as Topkapi Palace, the Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern and the Blue Mosque. You can visit the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and Basilica Cistern in Istanbul on a tour with priority entry tickets. Nearby is the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. While these days it’s filled mostly with tourist kitsch, add it to your Istanbul itinerary to explore the labyrinth-like maze and test out your bartering skills. 

October is an especially great time to take a boat cruise along the Bosphorus River, as the fall colours of the leaves reflect beautifully in the water. It’s also the best time to take a day trip to the Princes Islands, where cars are prohibited and you can leisurely explore on foot or bicycle. While the islands can get crowded in peak season, in October, they’re very peaceful and idyllic.
